William Jefferson Convicted Of Corruption Charges August 6, 2009 6:39 a.m. EST --- Advertisment --- Kris Alingod - AHN Contributor Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Former Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson, whose nine terms in Congress has been in many ways reduced to the $90,000 federal agents had found in his freezer, was found guilty on Wednesday of 11 of 16 corruption counts. He faces as much as a century and a half in prison, but plans to appeal. A jury in Alexandria, VA found the former congressman guilty after five days of deliberations. He was convicted of soliciting bribes, honest services wire fraud, money laundering, racketeering and conspiracy. The jury deemed him innocent on three counts: honest services wire fraud, obstruction of justice charge and violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He may receive up 150 years in prison when he is sentenced on Oct. 30.The jury reconvenes on Thursday to determine if he will also be required to forfeit payments worth $456,000 plus stock certificates. "We have been reminded today that we are a nation of laws, and not men," U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Dana Boente said in a statement. "It should be a clear signal that no public official - and certainly not a U.S. Congressman - can put their office up for sale and betray that office. It cannot be tolerated. It cannot just be another cost of doing business. And today, a jury of his peers held Congressman Jefferson accountable for his actions." Convicted in 2007, Jefferson lost his re-election bid last year. The 62-year-old Democrat's congressional office was raided by the FBI in May 2006 as part of an international investigation that he allegedly solicited bribes in return for help in obtaining business deals in African countries for a telecommunications company. Prosecutors say he accepted $100,000 in 2005 to bribe then-Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and that $90,000 of the money was found in "various frozen food containers and wrapped in aluminum foil" in the freezer in Jefferson's home. His attorney, Robert Trout, argued in closing on Wednesday that the government is trying to turn a "stupid" decision that amounted to an ethics violation into a crime. He maintained the former congressman never planned to give the money to Abubakar, and had only accepted it to appease Lori Mody, a Virginia businesswoman and federal informant. The trial began on June 9 after a number of delays set back the original date from Dec. 2, 2008. The other people indicted with Jefferson in the alleged corruption conspiracy are now in prison: former Kentucky businessman Vernon Jackson is serving seven years in exchange for being the the government's star witness, and former Jefferson legislative staffer Brett Pfeffer is serving an eight-year sentence.
