Los Angeles Eyes New Gun Control Law

Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - To further improve the declining crime rate in Los Angeles, two city council members are proposing a legislation that would further tighten gun control in the area. Los Angeles City Council members Jack Weiss and Janice Hahn are seeking to make it more difficult for residents with misdemeanor convictions to own a gun.
The proposal comes on the heels of the approval a few weeks back by the council of new ordinances with tightened restrictions on ammunition sellers. California has a law that bans possession of a gun for 10 years for people convicted of selected crimes, including assault, illegal weapons sales or threatening a public official or witness.
Weiss said it was time for LA to be more aggressive and creative in putting a stop to killings. Since January there have been 138 victims of gun violence in Los Angeles, although according to a report released Thursday by the LAPD's Olympic Division, incidents of violent crimes in the city went down 13 percent, and arrests rose by 60 percent.
Hahn added, quoted by the LA Times, "People who commit these types of crimes have already demonstrated bad judgment, and this ordinance gives us one more tool to keep guns out of their hands and off the streets of Los Angeles."
