Nokia, others rush for mobile software sales

 Reuters - Saturday, February 14
HELSINKI - The world's top cellphone maker Nokia will unveil its mobile software download service next week, hoping to follow the success of Apple's online App Store, two industry sources told Reuters on Friday.

The focus of the cellphone market has been shifting to software development since Google and Apple entered the mobile market in the past two years.
Nokia promised in early December to launch "soon" its own download store, as the Finnish firm merges its software Download! store with free media sharing site Mosh and widget service WidSets.
"This will provide consumers an easy way to get mobile media for their device," Nokia said in December.
Apple's App Store has proved to be popular with iPhone users, and helped spawn an entire industry of entrepreneurs who design the programs which can then be downloaded by consumers.
Apple said last month that a total of 15,000 applications are available and that downloads have hit 500 million in six months.
U.S. software firm Amdocs said it would unveil its white-label application store offering to telecom operators at the Mobile World Congress trade show next week in Barcelona.
Microsoft Corp is also planning an "online bazaar" for applications running on its Windows Mobile operating system, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Blackberry-maker Research in Motion said last year it plans to launch its app store early this year.
One of the sources also said Nokia would unveil a new E75 cellphone model at the trade show in Barcelona. The phone, already on sale on the Web site of online retailer Expansys, will be available next month in Britain.
The smartphone, with a sideways slide-out full keyboard, will sell for 390 pounds
