However, later in the session an intense sell-off was sparked by results of a U.S. Treasury bond auction that saw rates jump. Following the results of a five-year Treasury note auction that saw rates hit 2.3 percent. Bond traders and mortgage originators heavily sold the 10-year notes in order to hedge themselves, pushing the yield to 3.7 percent, the highest level in 2009. The move is worrisome because if it last, then the cost for the U.S. government to borrow money will go higher. Also weighing on investors Wednesday was news that General Motors failed to persuade bondholders to convert their securities into an equity stake, sparking speculation over not if the automaker will file bankruptcy, but when. Bondholders have about $27 billion in the automaker's debt. The Dow Jones Industrial average fell 173 points or 2 percent. 28 of 30 Dow components finished the session lower. Outside of GM, the biggest Dow laggards were the financial components. American Express and JP Morgan both fell more than 4 percent on Wednesday. The S&P 500 shed 17 points or 1.9 percent to fall below the 900 level. The index is now back into negative territory for the year, down 1.1 percent. All 10 major economic sectors finished lower with nine of then down at least 10 percent on the day. The tech heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 19 points or 1.1 percent. Big-cap tech outperformed for a second straight day, down just 0.7 percent. Apple saw share rise 1.7 percent on the session. The tech giant announced a few items, one of which was memory and storage upgrades to its $999 entry level MacBook. Crude oil rallied to a six-month high on Wednesday, adding a dollar a barrel to settle at $63.45 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On the economic front, the National Association of Realtors said April existing home sales rose 2.9 percent from last month to hit an annual rate of 4.68 million, just besting economist estimates for 4.67 million. In corporate news, Staples posted a 33 percent drop in first quarter earnings as comparable sales were down 8 percent in North America and 14 percent in Europe. Thursday's market will see the release of April durable goods orders, initial jobless claims for the week ended May 23 and April new home sales.
