Hollywood, CA, United States (AHN) - Around here, it's called May. Or spring. In Hollywood, it's called summer. Or ka-ching.
With the release of Iron Man 2, the summer movie season kicks off this weekend, as many of the year's potentially most-explosive blockbusters head for the starting gate.
Nobody's saying that originality and creativity are in hibernation, but notice the preponderance of sequels, remakes, and adaptations from other media due this summer. Just sayin'.
Anyway, here are the coming attractions from May through August in pretty much the order listed.
Each gets four stars. Until it opens.
MAY
Robert Downey Jr. puts the armor costume back on in the sequel to 2008's sci-fi fantasy thriller, Iron Man 2.
Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett are the latest to play Robin and Marion in director Ridley Scott's period adventure epic, Robin Hood.
Queen Latifah stars as a physical therapist who falls for the NBA star, played by Common, whom she's hired to help in the romantic B-ball comedy, Just Wright.
Saturday Night Live's Will Forte brings his McGiver-satirizing character from late-night TV to the big screen in the nick-of-time comedy, MacGruber.
The fourth installment in the wisecracking animated series about a green ogre who sounds suspiciously like Mike Myers emerges from the forest in Shrek Forever After.
The quartet of women who brought the heart of their TV series to the cinema screen two years ago returns in the traveling sequel, Sex and the City 2.
A popular video game gets the special-effects, big-screen treatment in the desert thriller, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
JUNE
Owen Wilson provides the voice of the large Great Dane who moves into a new neighborhood with his family in the live-action/animated children's comedy based on a comic strip, Marmaduke.
Ashton Kutcher forgets to mention to Katherine Heigl that he's a government hit man until after they're married in the action comedy, Killers.
Record company intern Jonah Hill is assigned the near-impossible task of getting out-of-control rock star Russell Brand to L.A.'s Greek Theater in time to perform in the ticking-clock concert comedy, Get Him to the Greek.
Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith inherit the roles of Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio in the transplanted remake with kung fu where karate used to be in The Karate Kid.
Bradley Cooper and Liam Neeson head the cast in the movie version of the eighties TV adventure series about ex-special ops, The A-Team.
The duet of unforgettable Toy Story flicks becomes a trio, with the voices of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen still resounding, in the years-later sequel, Toy Story 3.
Josh Brolin stars as the title character, a disfigured bounty hunter in the Civil War era, in the comic book-inspired action thriller, Jonah Hex.
Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider reunite thirty years later in the childhood-buddies-and-reminiscing-teammates comedy, Grown Ups.
A blind date between secret agent Tom Cruise and civilian Cameron Diaz starts them on a life-threatening adventure in the romantic action comedy, Knight and Day.
Kristen Stewart remains torn between vampire Robert Pattinson and werewolf Tylor Lautner in the romantic-drama sequel, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
JULY
Director M. Night Shyamalan's martial-arts fantasy, a live-action adaptation of television's animated Avatar: The Last Airbender (with the title trimmed for obvious reasons), is the first installment of a proposed trilogy about teenage superheroes, The Last Airbender.
Steve Carell is the lead voice, a maniacal mastermind named Gru, in a comedy about a heist of the moon in the 3-D animated comedy, Despicable Me.
Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, and Laurence Fishburne star in a second sequel to the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring thriller, Predator, in a science-fiction action film about humans battling to survive on an alien planet, Predators.
The latest from Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight and Memento, is a thriller about a group of "dream thieves" led by Leonardo DiCaprio, who insert themselves into people's subconscious while they're sleeping, Inception.
Nicolas Cage is a contemporary Manhattan sorcerer and Jay Baruchel the title character he recruits in a live-action supernatural family adventure thriller adapted from the same story that inspired Fantasia's best-known animated segment in The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
CIA agent Angelina Jolie goes on the run in New York City when she's accused of being a Russian spy in an action thriller about an attempted presidential assassination, Salt.
In hopes of getting a promotion, Paul Rudd agrees to bring the biggest idiot he can find --Steve Carell fills the bill -- to a special kind of dinner party in the American remake of a French comedy, Dinner for Schmucks.
AUGUST
Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg plays desk-bound cops who yearn to be streetwise supercops and then get the chance in the action buddy comedy, The Other Guys.
Julia Roberts stars in the movie version of the best-selling Elizabeth Gilbert memoir about an around-the-world year in the life of a recently divorced woman, Eat Pray Love.
Michael Cera is the title character, doing battle with the seven ex-boy friends of the young woman whose heart he's trying to win, in the comic book-inspired teen romance, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Hyphenate Sylvester Stallone is the star-director-co-writer of an action thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to overthrow a South American dictator, The Expendables.
Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman team up in a romantic comedy about a woman who is unaware, having undergone artificial insemination, that her best male friend has substituted his for her donor's sperm and is actually the father of her son in The Switch.
Matt Dillon, Paul Walker and Zoe Saldana head the cast of a thriller about a detective trying to catch high-tech bank robbers who have just attempted their final score in the thriller, Takers.
And Drew Barrymore headlines a romantic comedy as a graduate student in New York City trying to make a long-distance relationship work with California-based music executive Justin Long in Going the Distance.
Should be a busy summer at the movies: enjoy.
