Netanyahu spoke to President Barack Obama by telephone and "praised the United States on behalf of Israeli citizens for the successful mission and the killing of Osama bin Laden." A statement from his office said Netanyahu told Obama the action "sent a message of the United States' determination to fight terrorism." It added that "Obama thanked Netanyahu and clarified the United States' commitment to the war on terror." "This is a resounding triumph for justice, freedom and the values shared by all democratic nations fighting shoulder to shoulder in determination against terrorism," Netanyahu had said earlier. Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said security had been beefed up around U.S. representations in Israel. Defense Minister Ehud Barak said the killing of bin Laden was "an outstanding achievement which I have no doubt transmits directly to ... heads of terror organisations everywhere just how far the leaders of the free world are prepared to go in order to kill them." Barak said challenges remained after bin Laden's demise. "I don't think it is over, that we are at the end of the road ... there will be ups and downs. Al Qaeda have shown ... that they are very sophisticated and very determined, I would not take them lightly," he told Israeli Channel 10 television. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Israel, which has cast its own struggle with Palestinian and Lebanese militants as an extension of the U.S.-led campaign against al Qaeda worldwide, gained from bin Laden's death. "Al Qaeda has ceaselessly tried to penetrate Gaza and Judea and Samaria (West Bank)," he told Israel's Army Radio, referring to the Palestinian territories. "His interception has operational significance for us, too." Comments (1) cornelius wrote: “Here is the question:” Mr. President, “We know where bin Laden is; can we send a special force to capture him?” But far more elegantly in his speech Obama put his role this way: “At my direction . . .” It was a not so subtle grab for glory; more likely, the plan was laid out before Obama was asked the question. But the pragmatic politician must pursue pacifism with an almost imperceptible progression. Obama has been both pacifist yet default pragmatist in this War on Terror, to which he has been no friend. Half of his cuts in his budget are from the military. He has tried to disguise the cause of terrorist violence by patronizing terrorist supporter nations that in the end, snubbed and lost respect for him. He stopped capturing and interrogating the enemy, choosing to kill with Predator – including collaterally, grandchildren. The President lost my support when he was asked to provide reinforcements in 2009. It took half a year; even then, he sent substantially less than what he was asked for. He tried to change the name to Overseas Contingency Whatever, and attempted to bring terrorists into this country to be tried with citizen rights.
