ADVERTISEMENT Ringleader Abdulla Ahmed Ali was among those found guilty of conspiring to murder thousands in the plot, whose discovery triggered wide-ranging new rules on carrying liquids on commercial aircraft. Tanvir Hussain, 28, and Assad Sarwar, 29, were also found guilty on the same charges of plotting to carry out near-simultaneous bombings on planes flying from London's Heathrow airport to the United States and Canada. But Ibrahim Savant, 28, Arafat Waheed Khan, 27, and Waheed Zaman, 24, were found not guilty of the airline plot at Woolwich Crown Court. The jury failed to reach a verdict on the role of Umar Islam, 31, in the plot, although he was convicted of the second charge of conspiracy to murder. Donald Stewart-Whyte, 23, was found not guilty of both conspiracy to murder on aircraft and conspiracy to murder. Prosecutors had alleged that the plotters aimed to cause death on an "almost unimaginable scale", with some prepared to lose their lives "inflicting heavy casualties upon an unwitting civilian population, all in the name of Islam". The plot was drawn up in Pakistan, where Ali received details of the plan. He returned to Britain to assemble a terror cell, gather material and identify targets, the trial heard. However, he was under surveillance by British security forces all the time. Undercover officers bugged his flat in east London where he met others to build the bombs, as part of a police investigation that cost a total of 35 million pounds (57 million dollars, 40 million euros). The court trial heard how the conspirators planned to drill holes in the bottoms of soft drink bottles, drain the contents and fill them with liquid explosives before sealing the holes with glue. They explosives would contain hydrogen peroxide mixed with food colouring and a powdered soft drink. Refilled batteries would carry the chemical detonator, with the bombs being set off using a charge from a light bulb filament. They would have been assembled and detonated in mid-air by a team of suicide bombers. The group planned to smuggle the bombs aboard flights bound for Montreal and Toronto in Canada, and San Francisco, Washington, New York and Chicago in the United States that all left London within two-and-a-half hours of each other. British-born Ali was inspired by suicide bombers who attacked London's transport system on July 7, 2005, killing 52, and threatened further attacks against the West. He recorded a suicide video in his flat, warning the British public to expect "floods of martyr operations" that would leave body parts scattered in the streets.
