Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology US-TECH Summary Reuters - Wednesday, December 16 Send IM Story Print Google investing for growth in display ads SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> executives said the company experienced very strong growth in its display advertising business in the first three quarters of the year and it will continue to invest heavily in advertising initiatives involving online video and mobile Web devices. Speaking to investors and analysts during a webcast on Tuesday, the Internet search giant outlined the various elements of its efforts to increase its ad revenue from display ads such as graphical images, videos and interactive Web animations. YouTube looks at subscriptions, more ad dollars NEW YORK - YouTube is considering offering users the option to pay for subscriptions in a bid to encourage more media companies to license premium TV shows and movies to the popular online video site, a senior executive said. YouTube, which is owned by Internet search giant Google, is already known to have held talks with several major movie studios about renting movies. Comcast rolls out Web TV service nationally NEW YORK - Comcast Corp <CMCSA.O> has rolled out an on-demand, Web-based service for subscribers to both its video programing and Internet access in a bid to keep customers from dropping their cable subscriptions in search of free shows online. The new service is called Fancast XFINITY TV, and is the largest implementation of a cable industry initiative called TV Everywhere to make popular shows available over the Web to paying subscribers. Cable TV programmers like Time Warner Inc <TWX.N> and Viacom Inc <VIAb.N> are working with pay-TV providers like Comcast, Time Warner Cable Inc <TWC.N> and satellite TV operators. Borders jumps into digital books fray LOS ANGELES - Borders Group <BGP.N>, the bookstore chain criticized by some for being late to enter the digital books and readers market, has teamed up with fledgling Kobo Inc to set up an online store for mobile devices by 2010's second quarter. Loss-making Borders, which has been losing readers to larger rival Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N>, plans to integrate a new online store with its own website, Borders.com, it said in a statement on Tuesday. LG sets 3D TV target, to offer new lineup in 2010 SEOUL - LG Electronics Inc <066570.KS>, the world's No. 2 TV brand by revenue, set an aggressive sales target for 3D televisions, aiming to build a leadership position in an emerging market where competition is expected to heat up. Digital 3D TVs, which use double layered images and special glasses to trick viewers into seeing 3D, are set to become the next battlefield for top TV makers, including Samsung Electronics <005930.KS>, LG and Japanese rivals Sony Corp <6758.T> and Panasonic Corp <6752.T>. Sun Micro wins intellectual property cases NEW YORK - U.S. computer maker Sun Microsystems Inc <JAVA.O> said on Tuesday it won intellectual property cases in both the United States and Britain. Sun said that in the U.S. case it obtained a federal court judgment against Sun Valley Technical Repair, describing it as a major counterfeiter of its products. The owner is required to make a "substantial" monetary payment, it said. Spymaster sees Israel as world cyberwar leader TEL AVIV - Israel is using its civilian technological advances to enhance cyberwarfare capabilities, the senior Israeli spymaster said on Tuesday in a rare public disclosure about the secret program. Using computer networks for espionage -- by hacking into databases -- or to carry out sabotage through so-called "malicious software" planted in sensitive control systems has been quietly weighed in Israel against arch-foes like Iran. Microsoft suspends Juku after plagiarism claims - Microsoft <MSFT.O> said it was temporarily suspending its MSN China microblogging site, Juku, as it investigates a complaint of plagiarism from a start-up, Plurk. Microsoft is working with the MSN China joint venture to investigate the situation, the company said in a statement on its website. Craigslist CEO: Was told eBay's Whitman a "monster" WILMINGTON, Delaware - Craigslist's chief executive told a court on Monday that an executive with eBay, a minority shareholder, warned him to improve relations with eBay's then-CEO Meg Whitman because she could be a "monster" and "an Evil Meg" when frustrated. Craigslist's Jim Buckmaster testified that eBay Inc's <EBAY.O> dealmaker, Garrett Price, cautioned in an email that Craigslist was driving Whitman "to distraction" seven months after the auction company became a shareholder. Google phone with T-Mobile contract in Jan: source FRANKFURT/SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> plans to sell two versions of its own-branded cell phone: one with a service contract with T-Mobile USA and another that is unlocked, a source familiar with the matter said. The phone, manufactured by HTC <2498.TW>, has a number of code names such as HTC Passion, Dream or Nexus One and could be available directly though the Google website as early as January 5, according to the source.
