PAKISTAN - Market factors to watch - March 8

KARACHI, March 8 - Following is a list of events in Pakistan as well as news stories and press reports which may influence financial markets.

* The Federal Bureau of Statistics is due to release monthly inflation data on or soon after Tuesday. Reuters plans to release a poll on the data by midday .
* The bureau is due to release monthly foreign trade numbers on or soon after Wednesday.

* State Bank of Pakistan to sell 90.0 billion rupees worth of its 3-, 6-, and 12-month treasury bills on Wednesday.
MARKET SNAPSHOTS
* The rupee firmed amid a lack of import payments and dealers said some exporters continued to sell dollars in the market.
The rupee <PKR=> ended at 84.65/75 to the dollar on Saturday, compared with Friday's close of 84.56/66.
* On Friday, the Karachi Stock Exchange's benchmark 100-share index <.KSE> rose 114.76 points, or 1.21 percent, to end at 9,626.29 points on turnover of 129.7 million shares.
* The net inflow of foreign portfolio investment in the stock market was $10.05 million on Friday.

* U.S. stocks jumped and the Nasdaq hit an 18-month closing high on Friday as U.S. employers cut fewer jobs than expected last month and consumers showed signs of shedding their penny-pinching ways.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 122.06 points, or 1.17 percent, to end at 10,566.20. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> added 15.73 points, or 1.40 percent, to 1,138.70. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> rose 34.04 points, or 1.48 percent, to 2,326.35. [.N]
* Oil extended gains toward $82 a barrel on Monday, buoyed by a weaker dollar and signs of an economic recovery in top oil consumer, the United States.
Crude for April delivery <CLc1> rose 48 cents to $81.98 a barrel by 0306 GMT. On Friday, it rose as high as $82.07, the highest since $82.34 marked on Jan. 12. London Brent crude <LCOc1> was up 51 cents at $80.40. [O/R]
* Gold ticked higher on Monday after a firmer euro spurred bargain hunting from investors seeking a safe haven from volatile currencies, while palladium held near its strongest level in more than two years.
Gold <XAU=> traded as high as $1,136.85 an ounce and was at $1,133.97 by 0317 GMT, steady from New York's notional close on Friday, when bullion in euro terms jumped to a record at 838.26 euros on buying driven by a sovereign debt crisis in Greece. [GOL/]
