One was arrested in Jakarta and the other was arrested outside the capital in West Java province, Indonesia's Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said. He did not say when the men were arrested, but officials at Jakarta police headquarters said both were taken into custody on Saturday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to comment to the media on anti-terror matters. By Monday, police had arrested 18 men in a crackdown on what they call a new terror group in Aceh believed to have links to Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asian offshoot of al-Qaida blamed for deadly bombings in Indonesia in recent years. The arrests began with a police raid on their paramilitary training camp on Feb. 22. Since then, 14 have been charged with planning terrorist attacks. Police said they found a military assault rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition thought to belong to the militants hidden in a rice paddy on Sunday east of the Aceh Besar southern district where the hunt for militants is centered. The M-16 rifle had a similar Arabic serial number as another rifle seized from the militants, a detective involved in interrogating suspects said. The detective, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said one of those arrested was a former member of Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia, also known as MMI. The Java-based hardline group was founded but abandoned by Abu Bakar Bashir, the alleged spiritual leader of Jemaah Islamiyah. MMI concentrates on missionary and charity work but has previously been linked to militants. It was involved in relief operations in Aceh after it bore the brunt of the 2004 Asian tsunami. The detective did not name the suspect or say whether he was among the 14 charged. Counterterrorism police continued their village-by-village search for militants Monday in Aceh Besar near the mountains where the camp was found. Before 100 police attacked the camp on Feb. 22, villagers in the surrounding area said they did not suspect they had a terrorist training camp in their midst. Two local bystanders were shot in crossfire that night, one fatally. Another local farmer, Muhammad Nubari, 60, was shot dead on Thursday last week when militants ambushed police, killing three officers. At least one militant also died. "It was like a war," Nubari's daughter, Ramlah Nubari, said on Monday, adding that gunfire had continued through the night. A local village chief Teuk Maimum said village leaders were helping police by directing them to possible escape routes that that militants might use. Maimum said people had seen armed strangers with long mustaches in the mountains and shopping for supplies in villages before the police crackdown, but had assumed they were plainclothes police looking for marijuana plantations.
