Cyberattacks On U.S. Government Computer Networks Up 40 Percent In 2008

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team reported a 40 percent rise in cyberattacks in 2008 on American government computer networks. Number of installation of hostile programs and unauthorized access to government computer networks went up to 5,488 incidents last year from 3,928 in 2007.
Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair told Congress recently those involved in the cyberattacks on government networks include criminal groups or individuals which are seeking to disrupt power, communication or financial systems, and foreign government in search of intelligence materials. Blair identified the foreign governments as Russia and China.
To protect further government computer systems, U.S. President Barack Obama appointed last week Melissa Hathaway to head a cybersecurity initiative that will conduct a 60-day review of federal cybersecurity programs.
Meanwhile, with the approach of the deadline for filing of income tax returns, the Internal Revenue Service issued a warning to taxpayers to prepare for a surge in scams and virus attacks over email, telephone and the Internet. IRS spokeswoman Nancy Mathis said the most common type of scams are emails that claim to come from the IRS or the Treasury Department. The emails either scare the receivers there is an error in their tax filing or offer a tax rebate or benefit from the newly passed economic stimulus package.
