BARCELONA - Telecom industry leaders including Nokia <NOK1V.HE>, China Mobile <0941.HK> and Microsoft <MSFT.O> raced to announce online software stores on Monday in a drive to find new sources of revenue and please consumers. The success of Apple's <AAPL.O> AppStore, which lets iPhone users download thousands of small software programs to personalize the way they play games, listen to music or find directions has inspired admiration and envy in many rivals.
Microsoft revamps mobile push
BARCELONA - Microsoft <MSFT.O> said on Monday it had signed a deal with LG Electronics <066570.KS>, under which the world's third-largest cell phone maker will use Windows software in most of its smartphones. "A majority of their smartphones will use Windows," Andy Lees, the head of Windows' wireless unit, told Reuters in an interview.
Mobile industry highlights positives amid gloom
BARCELONA - Mobile industry executives at the sector's biggest annual fair are under no illusion as to how tough this year will be, with even the world's largest operator, China Mobile <0941.HK>, feeling the impact. But many executives at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona pointed out that, unlike the banking and automobile sectors, the telecoms industry did not need a bailout and that that it was uniquely placed to help, through new technologies and investment.
Freescale aims to sell Google Android netbooks in Q2
BARCELONA - Chipmaker Freescale, which began making chips for small netbook laptop computers last month, plans to expand its offering to include chipsets for Google's <GOOG.O> Android operating system by next quarter. The privately held company spun off from Motorola <MOT.N> in 2004 will also collaborate with wireless technology companies Wavecom <WAVC.PA> and Option <OPIN.BR> to make higher-end netbooks offering faster, third-generation connections.
Pirate Bay copyright test case begins in Sweden
STOCKHOLM - A copyright test case involving one of the world's biggest free file-sharing websites that could help music and film companies recoup millions of dollars in lost revenues started on Monday in Stockholm. Four men linked to The Pirate Bay were charged early last year by a Swedish prosecutor with conspiracy to break copyright law and related offences.
SanDisk enlists mobile carriers in memory card drive
BARCELONA - Flash memory maker SanDisk <SNDK.O> aims to boost sales of memory cards to store music and video on their mobile phones by tailoring their cards to highlight the offerings of individual network operators. Memory cards, which have gained wide adoption as a means for storing digital camera photos, have yet to take off in mobile phones, despite the fact that more than 70 percent of mobile phones sold this year are designed to use such cards.
Taiwan's Acer dials up smartphones for growth
BARCELONA - Acer Inc <2353.TW>, the world's third-largest PC brand, entered the increasingly crowded smartphone market on Monday with the unveiling of its first eight models at the World Mobile Congress trade show in Barcelona. "We are extremely serious entering this space," Aymar de Lencquesaing, the head of Acer's smartphone business, told a news conference, adding the company plans to break into the top five of smartphone makers in five years.
TI sees projectors as new camera phones
NEW YORK - Texas Instruments Inc <TXN.N> has unveiled new versions of its chips for advanced mobile features, including mini-projector technology it sees as the next big thing after the now ubiquitous cell phone camera. The chip maker is eyeing growth in features such as mobile web surfing and video, even as the overall phone market shrinks. It expects the new projector chips -- unveiled on Monday at the Mobile World Congress showcase in Barcelona -- to be ready for customers later this year and in commercial products in 2010.
Adobe to make video on smartphones
BARCELONA - Adobe Systems <ADBE.O>, which popularized the use of video and animation on the Web, is introducing a new version of its Flash software that runs not only on computers but also on the latest high-end mobile phones. Adobe, which makes Acrobat, Flash and Photoshop software, plans to bring a full PC version of its Flash video player to smartphones next year, but has no imminent deal to announce for Apple's <AAPL.O> influential iPhone, it said.
Samsung launches solar-powered phone
BARCELONA - Global number two mobile phone maker Samsung <005930.KS> launched five new phones on Monday including a model made from recycled plastic with a solar panel on the back for charging. Samsung said in a statement its "Blue Earth" solar-powered model had a touch screen and was made from plastic taken from used water bottles. It did not give pricing information or say when the phone would go on sale.
