Credit: Reuters/Stefan Wermuth LONDON | Thu Jul 15, 2010 8:24am EDT LONDON (Reuters) - BP confirmed on Thursday it had lobbied the British government in late 2007 over a Prisoner Transfer Agreement with Libya because it was concerned a slow resolution would impact an offshore drilling deal with Libya. "BP told the UK government that we were concerned about the slow progress that was being made in concluding a Prisoner Transfer Agreement with Libya," BP said in a statement on Thursday. "We were aware that this could have a negative impact on UK commercial interests, including the ratification by the Libyan government of BP's exploration agreement." BP said, however, it was not involved in discussions regarding the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basset al-Megrahi. "The decision to release al-Megrahi in August 2009 was taken by the Scottish government. It is not for BP to comment on the decision of the Scottish government. BP was not involved in any such discussions about the release of al-Megrahi," it said. (Reporting by Matt Scuffham; Editing by Dan Lalor) World Comments See All Comments (6)  |  Post Comment Jul 15, 2010 7:01am EDT Note: Scottish Government, NOT the British Government. Either way, the bomber shouldn’t have been released in the first place. However, i do believe this is irrelevant to the Gulf of Mexico spill… It happened before it, was a few thousand miles away, and is none of our damn business! Lets concentrate on the spill, yes??? Lexas Report As Abusive     Jul 15, 2010 7:49am EDT This is an important admission by BP, and it ought to tell the world just how influential businesses can be, and just how amoral they are (which is why governments need to prevent businesses from influencing them). That the Lockerbie Bomber is alive and well a year after his release, and alive and well a year after the experts who testified that he should be released from prison because he would be dead of cancer in a few weeks to a few months (but now are saying he could live another 10 to 20 years) makes me wonder what kind of deal was struck and who was exerting influence. It also makes me wonder if the Lockerbie Bomber ever HAD cancer in the first place. I part company with many of my fellow liberals in that I do not believe in the so-called compassionate release law. It shows no compassion for the victims and their relatives, and it assumes that prisoners aren’t and shouldn’t be treated humanely in the first place (the law is an admission that prisoners can’t and shouldn’t be treated compassionately while they are in prison and as they deal with death). This, to me, is terrible. Any inmate dying of cancer (or whatever else they might be dying of) should be receiving compassionate, appropriate medical/hospice care…IN PRISON. 1AmericanGuy Report As Abusive     Jul 15, 2010 7:57am EDT What? Is it news that in our magic western democracies societies big money moves a lot of strings? I’d be surprised if they were not doing it. i wonder why is lobby legal…Oh I know, because through the lobbies a lot of money goes into the political parties. You know what? Democracy pfffff Pedro07 Report As Abusive     Jul 15, 2010 8:04am EDT @ 1AmericanGuy: Where is Warren Anderson? What has the US government done to give him up to the justice system of the Indian government? Or is he happily living out his years ‘protected’ in his Long Island home? I would welcome your thoughts on this. PassingResident Report As Abusive     Jul 15, 2010 9:51am EDT I would say that it is all out war on the oil and gas companies. They seem to be the lowest lifeforms on earth and have held us all back for way too long. I wouldn’t lose a bit of sleep if there were major attacks on the heads of these companies that destroyed their leadership. It is pathetic that you people that keep supporting these companies after all you see them do. Bush was right we are addicted to oil and need to get away from it. It was about the only thing he was right about, and I can’t believe those words came from his mouth. We have other ways to power vehicles such as hydrogen and mark my word it will become the new fuel. All major auto makers have hydrogen vehicles being tested right now. GM is in their 2nd gen. Hell, you can make hydrogen at home, and it is easy. I have done it and I am not genius. I really believe that is the problem, people can make it themselves and of course oil and gas can’t have that. Wake up people. We are supporting evil!!! Take a look at Rocky Mountain institutes 20 hydrogen myths. jcameron Report As Abusive     Jul 15, 2010 11:24am EDT This is funny. Does anyone out there REALLY belive BP has ever, or will ever do things that are in the best interest of anyone other than the upper management or stock holders? Come on.
