Alan Grayson March 6, 2009 11:44 a.m. EST Kris Alingod - AHN Contributor Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Only four months into his first-term as a congressman, Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) is facing growing speculation about his prospects for re-election given what critics have alternately called his "courageous" and "combative" style. Reacting to an article by Politico entitled "Rep. Grayson won't hold his tongue," the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) warned Democrats of defeat in the mid-term elections, citing a "partisan firebrand" despite having one of their own, radio talk show Rush Limbaugh, grabbing headlines. "In less than three short months of being called out by colleagues and constituents for outrageous and embarrassing rhetoric, Alan Grayson has set a record for solidifying himself as a one-term congressman," NRCC spokesman Paul Lindsay said in a statement. "Middle-class families in Florida are looking for common-sense leadership to fight for them during these challenging times, not a partisan firebrand like Grayson who does more harm than good. It is no surprise that there is a deep bench of qualified candidates who are prepared to run for this seat, and the NRCC looks forward to working with the Republican nominee," Lindsay added. Grayson, a 50-year-old Harvard Law School who defeated a four-term GOP incumbent last November, rose in popularity in January after his staff posted video of him on YouTube lecturing Federal Reserve Board of Governor's Vice Chair Donald Kohn during a committee hearing on the government's $700 billion financial bailout program approved by Congress last October. The congressman quickly followed this up with a statement about Limbaugh, who was under fire at the time for saying in his radio show that he wanted President Barack Obama to fail. "Rush Limbaugh is a has-been hypocrite loser, who craves attention. His right-wing lunacy sounds like Mikhail Gorbachev, extolling the virtues of communism. Limbaugh actually was more lucid when he was a drug addict. If America ever did 1% of what he wanted us to do, then we'd all need pain killers," Grayson had said. Limbaugh has been the brunt of jokes and op-eds by Democrats, especially this week, when Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele apologized for calling the radio host an "entertainer" and "incendiary." But Grayson's statement on Wednesday about the apology didn't seem to gather much enthusiasm from pundits. Politico said in its article, "All of this has earned Grayson a national following of progressive admirers... In dozens of congressional districts across the nation, Grayson's approach would ensure a long career in office. The trouble is, Florida's 8th District isn't one of them... Republicans view his election as something of a fluke, the result of a combination of an unpopular GOP incumbent, a well-financed challenger - Grayson spent over $2 million of his own fortune - and Obama's coattails." The congressman had issued a statement mocking the GOP chairman's apology to Limbaugh. He said, "I'm sorry Limbaugh called for harsh sentences for drug addicts while he was a drug addict. I'm also sorry that he's bent on seeing America fail. And I'm sorry that Limbaugh is one sorry excuse for a human being."
