Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology US-TECH Summary Reuters - Monday, February 1 Send IM Story Print Smartphone competition to bite in 2010 after Q4 boom HELSINKI . Microsoft profit beats on strong Windows 7 sales SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> posted a bigger-than-expected 60 percent jump in quarterly profit, helped by strong sales of Windows 7, and said it expected business technology spending to recover this year. The world's biggest software maker said on Thursday that net profit came to $6.7 billion, or 74 cents per share, for its fiscal second quarter, versus $4.2 billion, or 47 cents per share, a year ago. Redesigned IBM exhibit opens at Disney World ORLANDO, Florida - A redesigned IBM exhibit called "Smarter Planet" opened on Friday at Walt Disney World near Orlando, bolstering IBM's 14-month-old campaign to rebrand itself as a company that provides global software solutions as well as its traditional hardware and technical services. "Smarter Planet is our way of describing what the possibilities are in the more intelligent, interconnected world," said IBM spokesman Clint Roswell. Apple pitches $499 iPad, takes on Amazon SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> CEO Steve Jobs took the wraps off a sleek tablet that it called the iPad, pitching the new gadget at a surprisingly low price to bridge the gap between smartphones and laptops. A buoyant Jobs took the stage at a packed theater on Wednesday to show off the 9.7-inch touchscreen tablet, which looks like a large iPhone, and to introduce a new iBook electronic reader service that will compete with Amazon.com Inc's <AMZN.O> Kindle. Amazon blows by estimates, sees strong first quarter SAN FRANCISCO - Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> blew past analysts' profit estimates in its closely watched holiday quarter and forecast revenue for early 2010 that topped already-high Wall Street expectations. The world's largest online retailer -- which sells everything from books to barbecues while offering a host of services to businesses and Web developers -- has been viewed as a winner of a fiercely competitive 2009 holiday season. Painful Wii price cut keeps Nintendo in the game TOKYO - Games maker Nintendo <7974.OS> showed greater than expected resilience in its battle for market share last quarter thanks in part to a 20 percent price cut on its Wii product that sliced into profits. A firm yen also took its toll on profits, and the Japanese company that earns 85 percent of its revenues outside its home country stuck to its forecast for a first annual profit fall in four years. Samsung Elec bullish on TV, chip demand SEOUL - Samsung Electronics <005930.KS> expects rapidly recovering demand for its premium computer memory chips and flat screen TVs to drive growth this year, with the unwinding of global stimulus measures the key risk for sales. The world's top maker of memory chips and LCD screens said the rising won currency could also dent earnings, although most analysts were bullish about the outlook for a company that has become a global brand in the space of 10 years. Oracle claims firm stole its intellectual property SAN FRANCISCO - Oracle Corp <ORCL.O> has filed a suit against a little known rival that provides low-cost software maintenance services, in a case similar to one that Oracle is fighting against rival SAP AG <SAPG.DE>. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. district court in Nevada on Monday, alleges that privately held Rimini Street stole copyrighted material using the online access codes of Oracle customers. AT&T profit rises 26 percent, plans more spending NEW YORK - U.S. consumers' obsession with using smartphones to find restaurants, surf the web and navigate city streets helped propel a 26 percent rise in AT&T's <T.N> quarterly profit -- but at a cost for the operator. The strain that wireless devices like smartphones and e-readers have placed on AT&T's network is such that the company announced on Thursday it will increase capital spending by about $2 billion this year, targeting improvements in its wireless service. Nokia, Motorola win smartphone share; outlook weighs HELSINKI/NEW YORK - Nokia <NOK1V.HE> and Motorola Inc <MOT.N> are regaining some market share in smartphones but while Nokia has profited from the gains, Motorola predicted a loss in the current quarter. Shares in top phone maker Nokia posted their biggest one-day gain in nine months on Thursday after it reported earnings that beat estimates, while Motorola shares fell more than 12 percent on worries its turnaround will take too long.
