Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - The White House this weekend said it plans to cut $20 billion from its proposed fiscal 2011 budget.
Dan Pfeiffer, President Obama's communications director, wrote on the White House's blog Saturday, that 120 programs could be cut or reduced to save the money. These cuts include:
? Consolidating 38 Department of Education programs into 11.
? Cutting the National Park Service's Save America's Treasure and Preserve America grant program. Pfeiffer said the programs started in 2000 and were only supposed to last two years. He said they "lack rigorous performance metrics and evaluation efforts so the benefits are unclear."
? Eliminate the Advanced Earned Income Tax Credit. Taxpayers with children may file a form with their employers and receive a portion of the tax credit throughout the year in their paychecks. But Pfeiffer said only about 3 percent, or 514,000 taxpayers take advantage of the credit. He also said the program is too prone to error.
? End the Abandoned Mine Lands Payment to Certified States program. Pfeiffer said states and tribes already cleaned up most of the mines, so paying them after the fact doesn't make sense.
