Hackers breach Nasdaq's computers
NEW YORK - The operator of the Nasdaq Stock Market said it found "suspicious files" on its U.S. computer servers and determined that hackers could have affected one of its Internet-based client applications. There was no evidence the hackers accessed or acquired customer information or that any of parent company Nasdaq OMX Group Inc's <NDAQ.O> trading platforms were compromised, the transatlantic exchange operator said on Saturday.
Nokia likely to sack several executives: report
FRANKFURT - The world's biggest cellphone maker Nokia <NOK1V.HE> is likely to sack several executive board members in a management shake-up, a German weekly reported. As rival companies have been eating into Nokia's market share, Chief Executive Officer Stephen Elop, who took over last September, is due to unveil a revamp of the company's strategy, which could include organizational changes, on February 11.
Verizon halts iPhone orders after record first day
NEW YORK - Verizon Wireless ended online sales of Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone on Thursday evening, after beating its previous launch-day phone sales record in just two hours. But Verizon shares fell almost 1 percent as analysts cautioned that the new phone would hurt profits at the No. 1 U.S. mobile operator, whose shares had risen 13 percent since November in anticipation of the device.
Depletion of Internet addresses reflects wired world
SAN FRANCISCO - Thirty years after the first Internet addresses were created, the supply of addresses officially ran dry on Thursday. But don't panic. The transition to a new version of addresses is already well under way and, for most people, should occur without even being noticed.
Facebook to unveil Menlo Park campus next week
SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook, which turned seven on Friday, already needs new offices. The world's largest social network invited reporters to an event on Tuesday to showcase a new campus in Menlo Park, adjacent to its current headquarters in Palo Alto, California.
Slim's Telcel pitches new fee proposal to rivals
MEXICO CITY - Telcel, the commercial brand of tycoon Carlos Slim's cell phone giant America Movil, proposed new, lower fees for its rivals to connect to the company's massive network in Mexico on Friday. The fees that Telcel charges to other companies using its telecommunications installations have in the past triggered complaints from smaller players to competition authorities.
Canada court overturns government ruling on Globalive
TORONTO - A Canadian court struck down on Friday a federal government move to allow Globalive, a company with substantial foreign control, to operate a wireless service in Canada. The Federal Court judgment said the government's decision to overturn a federal telecoms regulator's ruling, which sought to prevent Globalive from operating, was "null and void in that it was determined on a basis in law not provided for in the Telecommunications Act."
Journalists detail on Twitter media attacks in Egypt
LOS ANGELES - Several international journalists are detailing on Twitter attacks on the media in Cairo. Following are some of their recent Tweets:
Verizon may curb heavy iPhone data users
NEW YORK - Verizon Wireless warned customers it may clamp down on heavy users of its wireless data services before an anticipated deluge of Apple Inc <AAPL.O> iPhone customers. The mobile service provider is expected to benefit from strong pent-up demand for the device as it ends AT&T Inc's <T.N> more than three-year hold on U.S. iPhone sales.
Corning makes upbeat glass forecast, shares rise
NEW YORK - Corning Inc <GLW.N> is looking to boost sales of its glass more than 50 percent by 2014, banking on the popularity of tablets and smartphones, which helped boost its shares 3.5 percent on Friday. Corning said its display segment, which makes up the bulk of the company's profit and includes glass for touchscreen devices and liquid crystal display televisions, would increase to between $3.4 billion and $3.8 billion by 2014 from $3 billion in 2010. This would create demand for an extra 2 billion square feet of LCD glass in the next three years.
