Credit: Reuters/Darren Staples CARDIFF/LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's opposition Liberal Democrats sought on Monday to use a surprise surge in support to present themselves as a credible governing party before a national election on May 6. World The spike in Lib Dem popularity poses a threat to the Conservatives, the bigger opposition force seeking to end 13 years of Labor Party rule. The Conservatives fought back by warning that the Lib Dems could help Labor cling onto power. The election has been thrown wide open since a strong performance by Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg last Thursday in a live TV debate with Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Labor and Conservative leader David Cameron. "I want to be the next prime minister," the centrist Clegg, 43, told a news conference in the Welsh capital Cardiff. In the latest of a series of shock poll results, a YouGov survey published in Monday's Sun newspaper found the Lib Dems in first place with 33 percent, with the Conservatives on 32 percent and Labor on 26 percent. For decades, the center-right Conservatives and center-left Labor were considered parties of government, while the Lib Dems were dismissed as irrelevant in national politics. "I can't predict what is going to happen ... All I know is that the old anchors, the old patterns, the old established routines are breaking down," Clegg said. The Conservatives held a commanding poll lead over both Labor and the Lib Dems for much of the past two years but the gap has shrunk in recent months. The Lib Dem surge since last Thursday is a new headache for the Conservatives. FEAR OF A FUDGE Instead of a clear Conservative win allowing them to govern solo, the election could produce a "hung parliament" in which no party has an overall majority of seats and can rule alone. The Lib Dems are unlikely to win as many seats as Labor or the Conservatives despite their popularity spike, but they could win enough to force the other two parties to seek their support. Britain's sterling currency fell sharply on Monday on fears of such an outcome. Markets worry a hung parliament could lead to haggling between the parties and delays in tackling the deficit, which is running at a worrying 11 percent of GDP. "What the markets want, what the people of this country want is, they want competence, they want certainty, they want a government that knows what it's doing," said finance minister Alistair Darling, playing the experience card for Labor. Speaking at his own campaign event in London, Cameron said only a clear Conservative win could kickstart the economy. "Does anyone think we're going to get out of this economic hole without real, decisive leadership?" Cameron said, warning a hung parliament could allow Labor and the Lib Dems to make a deal to govern together, leaving the country "stuck." "We've got big problems with our deficit. We've got to get on and start cutting the government waste. Are we going to get that with some fudged decision at the election? Never. We're only going to get it with a decisive Conservative government." The Lib Dems would appear more natural bedfellows with Labor in any kind of coalition. But if Labor win a lower percent of the popular vote than the Conservatives, such an alliance would be hard for the Lib Dems to justify -- given their long calls for proportional representation. The Lib Dems appear to have struck a chord with voters disillusioned with politicians after a scandal over lawmakers' expenses, which has hit the two biggest parties hardest. The party has also talked tough on banks and bonuses -- another target of public ire after the credit crisis.
