UAE to suspend Blackberry service on security fears
DUBAI - The United Arab Emirates will suspend use of Blackberry services in October, citing concerns about security risks, the state news agency said on Sunday. The UAE said it would halt Blackberry services until an "acceptable solution" is developed and applied.
Software released for attacking Android phones
LAS VEGAS - Two security experts said on Friday they released a tool for attacking smartphones that use Google Inc's <GOOG.O> Android operating system to persuade manufacturers to fix a bug that lets hackers read a victim's email and text messages. "It wasn't difficult to build," said Nicholas Percoco, head of Spider Labs, who along with a colleague, released the tool at the Defcon hacker's conference in Las Vegas on Friday.
BlackBerry maker to launch tablet in November: report
TORONTO - Research In Motion <RIM.TO> will introduce a tablet computer in November to compete with Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing two people familiar with the company's plans. The Waterloo, Ontario-based maker of the BlackBerry smartpnone will call the device the Blackpad, according to one of the sources.
Emboldened RIM readies new touchscreen BlackBerry
OTTAWA - Research In Motion <RIM.TO> <RIMM.O> is not known for its dramatic flair. Like the BlackBerry itself, with its renowned email security, the Canadian smartphone maker seems to put function before form. But RIM may break with tradition next Tuesday when it raises the curtain on its long-awaited answer to the iPhone at an unusual company "event" in midtown Manhattan.
Bitter smartphone war seen pinching vendor margins
HELSINKI - An increasingly heated battle in the global smartphone market is set to weigh on handset vendors' profit margins for the rest of the year, analysts said on Friday. All top cellphone vendors including Nokia <NOK1V.HE>, Samsung Electronics <005930.KS> and Research in Motion <RIMM.O> <RIM.TO> are rolling out new smartphone models for the holiday sales-fueled fourth quarter.
Facebook may postpone IPO to 2012: report
- Social networking website Facebook Inc may postpone its initial public offering until 2012, Bloomberg said, citing three people familiar with the matter. The move may give Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg more time to gain users and boost sales, but Zuckerberg could still push for a stock sale at any time, the agency said.
Google says China search block may be tech glitch
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> said its earlier report that Internet search services in China were being fully blocked could have been the result of a technical glitch that overstated the problem. Google shares pared losses to 1 percent from a 1.6 percent decline earlier on Thursday after the company said on its website that its Internet search, mobile and advertising services could not be accessed in China.
Samsung Elec to introduce Android-based tablet in Q3
SEOUL - Samsung Electronics Co <005930.KS> plans to introduce tablet computers this quarter based on Google's <GOOG.O> Android operating system, joining a growing list of firms seeking to challenge Apple's <AAPL.O> popular iPad. Global handset vendors and PC makers including Nokia <NOK1V.HE>, LG Electronics <066570.KS> and Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N> are moving into the new category of devices, between traditional PCs and smartphones, taking a cue from Apple.
Microsoft talks up tablets, shows off new phones
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> set out its ambitions to dominate the consumer electronics market on Thursday with Windows-powered tablet computers and smartphones designed to beat back advances by Apple Inc <AAPL.O> and Google Inc <GOOG.O>. New tablets will be available as soon as they are ready to ship and phones will be on the market this autumn, CEO Steve Ballmer said, setting up a key test of Microsoft's ability to capture the imagination of tech-savvy consumers.
TeleNav shares sink on revenue worries on Sprint deal
BANGALORE - Navigation technology company TeleNav Inc <TNAV.O> warned that a contract renegotiation with its largest customer could lead to a fall in revenue, sending its shares down 16 percent in extended trade. TeleNav said it expects any extended agreement would lead to declines in average revenue per user and significant reductions in total revenue from Sprint Nextel Corp <S.N>, despite a likely rise in the number of subscribers.
