Ben Affleck steals box office crown with "Town"
LOS ANGELES - Ben Affleck made off with a bigger-than-expected haul at the weekend box office in North America on Sunday as his heist thriller "The Town" surprised observers with a strong No. 1 opening. The movie, which Affleck both directed and stars in, earned an estimated $23.8 million during its first three days, distributor Warner Bros. said. It had been expected to open at No. 2 in the $15 million to $20 million range.
"King's Speech" wins top Toronto film fest prize
TORONTO - "The King's Speech" won the top award at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, giving the Tom Hooper-directed film some early momentum heading into Oscar awards season. The film, which stars Colin Firth as Britain's reluctant King George VI and Geoffrey Rush as his speech therapist, captured the festival's People's Choice award.
"The Bang Bang Club" relives apartheid's last days
TORONTO - In the final years of apartheid, four South African photojournalists went to extraordinary lengths to capture the horrors of poverty and violence in images that made international headlines. "The Bang Bang Club," which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, documents how they bore witness to the traumatic events of 1991 to 1994 leading to the end of white minority rule in South Africa.
Lindsay Lohan tweets that she failed drug test
LOS ANGELES - Actress Lindsay Lohan confirmed on Friday that she had failed a court-ordered drug test a few weeks after being released from jail and going through a rehabilitation program. Lohan, whose career has been derailed by drunken driving and drug possession charges and a reputation for erratic behavior, posted a series of messages on her Twitter page that confirmed media reports of recent drug use.
Russell Brand arrested in paparazzi scuffle
LOS ANGELES - "Get Him to the Greek" star Russell Brand was taken into police custody Friday after reportedly "pushing and striking" photographers at Los Angeles International Airport. The paparazzi were snapping photos of him and his fiancee, singer Katy Perry, while they were going through airport security.
Indian conglomerate in talks about MGM bid
SAN FRANCISCO - Indian conglomerate Sahara India Pariwar is in discussions about buying the debt of struggling film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for $1.5 billion to $2 billion, according to two people familiar with the matter. The sources did not elaborate on Sahara India Pariwar's plans for MGM, which has about $4 billion in debt, and stressed that the talks were still at a preliminary stage.
Letterman knew Joaquin Phoenix was faking: writer
LOS ANGELES knew that Phoenix was faking his bizarre behavior for Affleck's documentary-style film "I'm Still Here," released September 10. But one of Letterman's writers, Bill Scheft, said in an interview last year: "Dave knew about it and Dave loved it because he could play along."

Stewart and Colbert plan spoof of Tea Party rally
NEW YORK - In an apparent spoof of the recent Tea Party rally in Washington, America's leading satirists Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert will hold rallies on the National Mall days before the November election. Daily Show host Stewart -- who satirizes U.S. political news from a Democratic viewpoint -- announced details of his "Rally to Restore Sanity" on his website on Friday, saying it was for those "who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive and terrible for your throat."
Lady Gaga urges repeal of gay military ban
LOS ANGELES - Singer Lady Gaga released a video on Friday urging members of the Senate and her "fellow Americans" to help repeal the military rule banning openly gay people from serving in the armed forces. In her most overt political stance to date, Gaga, 24, described herself as "a voice for my generation" and urged her millions of fans to help overturn the policy which allows gay men and women to serve in the military as long as they keep their sexual orientation private.
