US hiker feels 'one-third free' as friends stay in Iran jail
NEW YORK (AFP) - – Freed American hiker Sarah Shourd said on Sunday she was crushed not to be sharing her freedom with her fiance and friend who remain behind bars almost 14 months after straying into Iran from Iraq.
"My disappointment at not sharing that moment with Shane and Josh was crushing. And I stand before you today only one third free," said Shourd at a press conference alongside the mothers of Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal.
"That was the last thing that Josh said to me before I walked through the prison doors. Josh and Shane felt one third free at that moment and so did I."
Shourd, 32, was released on Tuesday but her fiance Bauer and friend Fattal remain jailed in Tehran after they were detained on July 31, 2009.
The authorities charged the three with "spying and illegally entering the country," but they said they entered Iran by mistake after getting lost in Iraqi Kurdistan.
"Getting on the plane in Tehran was one of the most memorable and important moments of my life. But this is not the time to celebrate," Shourd told reporters in New York hours after returning to the United States.
Addressing reports that she had suffered from a lump in her breast and a pre-cancerous cervical condition, Shourd said she had been seen by doctors in Oman following her release and was determined to be in good health.
"I had many concerns while I was in prison about my health. And thankfully the doctors in Oman have assured me that I am physically well."
Shourd also praised the Iranian government but insisted that her companions should be freed because they had done nothing wrong.
"My gratitude goes in particular to (Iran supreme leader) Ayatollah (Ali) Khamenei and President (Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad for my compassionate release from detention," said Shourd, who was released on 500,000 dollars bail.
"Shane and Josh don't deserve to be in prison one day longer than I do. We committed no crime, and we are not spies."
Shourd arrived in New York just hours after Ahmadinejad arrived in the city ahead of the United Nation's General Assembly meeting.
In an interview with ABC, Ahmadinejad urged Washington to release eight Iranians as a "humanitarian gesture" following Shourd's release.
He nevertheless said that the release of the remaining two US hikers was in the hands of the judiciary.
Shourd's mother, Nora, also spoke at the press conference and said she and the other mothers were holding onto hope that Fattal and Bauer would also be freed.
"I applaud the humanity that set Sarah free and why I cry encore, encore for Shane and Josh," Nora Shourd said.
"We will not stop until they are home and we will redouble our efforts to get them out.
Shane's mother, Cindy Hickey, voiced hope that Shourd's release was a step towards the release of the remaining two prisoners.
"We are encouraged that perhaps the humanitarianism will be renewed and our sons will be home very soon."
