Sign Up News Home - Help Navigation Primary Navigation Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Top Stories Most Popular Secondary Navigation Search Search: AMD, ATIC to build US semiconductor plant AFP - Thursday, March 5 WASHINGTON (AFP) - - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and its Abu Dhabi partner confirmed plans on Wednesday to build a new semiconductor plant in New York and unveiled the name of their new joint venture, Globalfoundries. ADVERTISEMENT AMD, which is handing over its manufacturing activities to the new company, and Advanced Technology Investment Co. (ATIC) of Abu Dhabi said in a statement that the 4.2-billion-dollar facility would be located in Saratoga, New York. They said the plant, Fab 2, "is expected to create approximately 1,400 new direct jobs and more than 5,000 indirect jobs in the region. "Once operational, Fab 2 will be the only independently-managed, advanced semiconductor manufacturing foundry in the United States, bucking the trend of manufacturing industries leaving the US," they added. They said the factory will use "state-of-the-art" 32-nanometer manufacturing technology to build chip circuitry 32/billionths of a meter or one/millionth of an inch across and even smaller. AMD and ATIC also announced plans to expand an existing plant in Dresden, Germany "to meet the long-term needs of the industry." "In Dresden, Germany, we plan to deliver on our commitment to expand our industry-leading manufacturing cluster with a second facility for bulk silicon," said Globalfoundries chairman Hector Ruiz. "In New York we plan to build a state-of-the-art wafer foundry, that once complete will be the most advanced of its kind in the world, creating new jobs and solidifying the region as a cluster for semiconductor innovation," he said. The Santa Clara, California-based AMD has lost money for nine straight quarters and has been falling behind market leader Intel Corp. Intel this month announced plans to invest seven billion dollars over the next two years to build advanced US manufacturing plants using nanotechnology in the United States. Globalfoundries, which starts operations with 2,800 employees worldwide, will have its principal headquarters in Silicon Valley, and its research and development and manufacturing teams in New York, Dresden, and Austin, Texas.
