Russia clamps down on Internet, Google frowns
MOSCOW - A court in Russia's far east has ordered an Internet provider to block five sites which it said disseminated extreme views, prompting U.S. Internet giant Google <GOOG.O> to say on Thursday the move restricted access to information. Russian Internet provider Rosnet appealed on Wednesday to overturn the ruling by a district court in Russia's Far Eastern city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur, which is the only place the order applies, and which ordered Rosnet to limit access to the five sites that include the YouTube video service owned by Google.
Japan robots chat, play -- and help find lost specs
TOKYO - Robots that can chat, find misplaced glasses, draw airplanes and play with your children are attracting thousands of visitors during an expo in Tokyo as Japan adapts to changes in society. Robots, such as the sound-sensitive Chapit, answer simple questions and even joke with people to help the solitary fight loneliness and stay alert in old age.
U.S. sues Oracle, alleges software contract fraud
WASHINGTON - The Justice Department said on Thursday it sued Oracle Corp <ORCL.O>, alleging it defrauded the federal government on a software contract in effect from 1998 to 2006 that involved hundreds of millions of dollars in sales. The lawsuit alleged Oracle misrepresented its true commercial sales practices, ultimately leading to government customers receiving deals inferior to those Oracle gave its commercial customers, the department said.
Amazon offers $139 wireless Kindle for mass appeal
SEATTLE - Amazon.com <AMZN.O> launched a cheaper, wireless-only Kindle on Wednesday, betting that the $139 price will turn its latest electronic reader into a mass-appeal device as Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad gains ground. The world's largest online retailer and leading e-reader seller also revealed its third generation Kindle, some 21 percent smaller and 15 percent lighter than the previous version, but still priced at $189.
Low-tech Shatner eyes Twitter, says what the "$#*!"
LOS ANGELES - William Shatner confesses he has problems with the digital age. At 79 years old, he doesn't use Twitter and can't remember computer passwords. So what is the actor -- who started in television when it was aired exclusively live and became a pop culture hero in "Star Trek" 40 years ago -- doing in the first TV series dreamed up from a Twitter account?
Motorola 2nd-qtr results beat Street, shares rise
NEW YORK - Motorola Inc <MOT.N> posted stronger-than-expected quarterly results on strength in its enterprise and network units, boosting its shares despite investors' frustration that its phone sales target wasn't raised. Investors had hoped that the popularity of Motorola's Droid X, its latest phone being championed by Verizon Wireless, would result in a new, higher forecast for 2010 smartphone sales.
Sony surprises with Q1 profit, raises outlook
TOKYO - Sony Corp <6758.T> lifted its annual outlook and returned to profitability in the first quarter on booming demand for its Bravia flat TVs and PlayStation 3 game consoles. Rivals Panasonic Corp <6752.T> and Sharp Corp <6753.T> also reported profits for April-to-June versus losses a year ago, while Panasonic joined Sony in upgrading its forecast as both companies cashed in on growing sales in emerging markets.
India raises security concerns over BlackBerry services
NEW DELHI - India has raised security concerns with Research In Motion <RIM.TO> over the Canadian company's popular BlackBerry services, but is not planning a ban in the world's fastest growing mobile phone market. Internal Security Chief U.K. Bansal told reporters on Thursday that he hoped Indian concerns that militants may use the BlackBerry data services would be resolved soon.
RIM stock jumps as revamped BlackBerry nears
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Shares of Research In Motion <RIM.TO> <RIMM.O> jumped on Wednesday on speculation that next week it would unveil a new touchscreen BlackBerry that could compete more effectively with Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone and other smartphones. RIM is expected to announce the launch of the BlackBerry 9800 at a joint event with AT&T Inc <T.N> in New York next Tuesday. AT&T is expected to get exclusive U.S. rights to sell the new device.
Facebook beats back patent infringement claim
WILMINGTON, Del - Facebook Inc won a legal fight on Wednesday over claims its hugely popular social networking website infringed a patent owned by Leader Technologies, but the little-known company said it would ask the judge to set aside the verdict. The eight-member jury ruled that Leader's patent was invalid, according to Facebook's attorney, Michael Rhodes of Cooley LLP, which represents Facebook.
