Facebook redraws site's privacy boundaries

SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook, the world's No.1 Internet social network, took a step toward opening up parts of its site to outsiders Wednesday by introducing more options for user's privacy settings. The changes will make it easier for Facebook's more than 350 million users to limit who sees their musings, videos, photographs and other personal information, but will also give them the opportunity to expose a wider swathe of their information to a broader Internet audience.

Ebay exec emails: Feign surprise to Craigslist

SAN FRANCISCO - Emails from a top eBay Inc <EBAY.O> executive showed the Internet giant was aware that a competing online classifieds site it launched while sitting on the board of Craigslist was a sensitive issue to be handled delicately, according to court testimony on Tuesday. EBay executives were told to feign surprise if Craigslist executives were to react negatively to news that eBay was launching its Kijiji classifieds site, one email showed.

France's Sarkozy takes on Google in books dispute

GEISPOLSHEIM, France - French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Tuesday he would not let his country's literary heritage be taken away by a "friendly" large American company, in a thinly veiled challenge to Google <GOOG.O> France is anxious to avoid French-language literature being swallowed by major international digitisation projects and is looking to create its own national digital champion.

Yahoo open to sell HotJobs for right price

SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> CEO Carol Bartz put a 'for sale' sign on HotJobs on Tuesday, saying Yahoo was open to selling the non-core unit for the right price even though an improving economy could help its prospects. Rates for Yahoo's premium online display ads were continuing to pick up after being pressured during the economic recession and the ad spending slump, Bartz also said at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York.

France Telecom follows Apple's lead, launches applications

PARIS - Taking a page out of Apple's <AAPL.O> book, France Telecom's <FTE.PA> mobile phone unit Orange launched its own shop to sell downloadable videos, games, music and other content to its 130 million mobile phone subscribers. Orange said on Wednesday it will launch its App Shop in France and the UK immediately, and then roll it out into its other markets like Spain, Poland, and Slovakia in 2010.

U.S. online holiday spending up 3 percent: comScore

SAN FRANCISCO - U.S. online holiday spending has risen 3 percent this holiday season, but shopping online slowed over the weekend after the special deals and discounts offered by retailers on Cyber Monday ended, analytics firm comScore Inc <SCOR.O> said on Tuesday. For the first 36 days of the November-December holiday season, online holiday spending reached nearly $16 billion, comScore said, up 3 percent from a year ago. For the week ending December 6, comScore said online holiday spending rose 3 percent to $4.6 billion.

UK makes online safety lessons for kids compulsory

LONDON - Britain is to make online safety lessons for children over 5 compulsory under a new scheme which aims to echo road safety campaigns of the past. The lessons are part of a "Click Clever Click Safe" strategy which will produce guidelines for government, industry and charities on how to protect children using the web.

Google revamps search with real-time results

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California - Google Inc <GOOG.O> has revamped its search engine to allow results to be refreshed with up-to-the-second data increasingly churned out by the new crop of real-time Web products. The move to integrate real-time search results directly into Google's flagship Web search product comes nearly two months after the company announced a partnership to license data from microblogging service Twitter.

Ancestry site puts Hitler's war service online

LONDON - A British genealogy website has put Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler's World War One military service records online, alongside those of more than a million other soldiers who fought for Germany. Ancestry.co.uk, which bills itself as Britain's leading family history website, has begun the online launch of the Bavarian WWI Personnel Rosters, a collection of records showing the military service activities of 1.5 million soldiers who fought with the Bavarian Regiment in the "war to end all wars."

Oscar insiders take their movie chat online

LOS ANGELES - Adam Shankman has a Twitter habit, and it's making Academy officials nervous. Although the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has nothing against publicity, it likes to dole out its news about the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, set for March 7, on its own timetable.
