Jackson doctor negotiating surrender: lawyers
LOS ANGELES - Lawyers for Michael Jackson's doctor said on Thursday they were negotiating his surrender to Los Angeles authorities, amid media reports he could face an involuntary manslaughter charge within a day. Dr. Conrad Murray, who has admitted giving the late pop singer a dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol as a sleep aid, is expected to be formally charged on Friday with involuntary manslaughter, celebrity website TMZ.com reported.
Brittany Murphy died from pneumonia, anemia, drugs
LOS ANGELES - Actress Brittany Murphy's death in December was accidental and the result of pneumonia, anemia and "multiple drug intoxication," the Los Angeles Coroner's office said on Thursday. Murphy, 32, the co-star of movies "Clueless" and "8 Mile" suffered a cardiac arrest on December 20 in the bathroom of her Hollywood Hills home.
Oscar contenders vie for underdog status
LOS ANGELES - Is "Avatar" truly the underdog? That's the way Fox co-chairman Tom Rothman saw the best picture race last month in an interview with the New York Times -- and that was before "Avatar" lost to "The Hurt Locker" at the producers and directors guild awards in recent weeks.
New art auction record may not be end, say experts
LONDON - A Giacometti statue smashed the art auction record late on Wednesday, fetching $104.3 million after just eight minutes of intense bidding at Sotheby's, and experts predict there may be even higher numbers to come. "You only need two individuals to take something to $104 million or more," said Philip Hoffman, founder of the Fine Art Fund Group which has more than a dozen billionaire clients.
Lady Antebellum set to crush Lil Wayne on U.S. chart
LOS ANGELES - Look for Lady Antebellum to retain its No. 1 spot on the U.S. pop album chart when data are released next Wednesday. The Grammy-winning country trio's second album "Need You Now" could sell between 190,000 to 220,000 copies sold by week's end on February 9.
Who can afford Howard Stern?
LOS ANGELES - Howard Stern has begun negotiating a new radio contract. Perhaps not technically, but Stern's on-air mentions of his exclusive Sirius XM Radio deal winding down at year's end, and his hedged proclamations of competing offers, are what one insider called his "method of operation." Not only is it his way of rallying his fan base so they'll agitate on his behalf, but he also is making sure that celestial and terrestrial radio know they'll need to bid against each other if they intend on retaining -- or attaining -- his services.
Jay-Z sues lender over loan for NYC property
NEW YORK - Rap music artist, Jay-Z, on Wednesday sued an investment firm and a bank, accusing them of trying to "bleed" $3.7 million from him over a loan to help him build a hotel on Manhattan's west side. The lawsuit was filed in a Manhattan federal court against Highland Capital Management LP and NexBank SSB, concerning a property located at 511 West 21st Street in Manhattan, which was to be developed into lodging known as the J Hotel.
Hollywood loses landmark copyright case in Australia
SYDNEY - Hollywood studios lost a landmark copyright court case against an Australia internet provider on Thursday, when a court ruled iiNet could not be held responsible for unauthorized downloads of movies using its service. The suit against iiNet was filed by a group of the biggest Hollywood studios including Village Roadshow, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, 20th Century Fox and Disney.
"Up" a favorite in quality Oscar race for animation
LOS ANGELES - The animation category at this year's Oscars ceremony presents a crowded field of singing frogs, sly foxes and spunky kids, but despite some tough competition, the high-flying adventure movie "Up" is expected to float away with the Oscar. Disney/Pixar's "Up" this week became the only animated film apart from 1991's "Beauty and the Beast" to land a best picture nod, and the movie about a boy and an old man who fly off in a house tied to balloons is also nominated in the animated category.
Web-based mystery romance lures indie producer
LOS ANGELES - Independent producer Relativity Media has hooked "Catfish," an intriguing lo-fi documentary that unfolds as a Web-based romantic mystery. The film surprised audiences and potential distributors alike when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival nearly two weeks ago. Numerous screenings were subsequently set up in Los Angeles -- on studio lots and in executives' homes.
