The researchers said young people who are over-exposed to antibacterial soaps containing triclosan may have become more prone to allergies and higher levels of a chemical most commonly used as a plastic hardener, known as Bisphenol A or BPA. This exposure may negatively impact the immune system, according to the study. Triclosan is a chemical compound commonly used in products like antibacterial soaps, toothpastes, pens, diaper bags and medical devices. Both Triclosan and BPA are in a cass of environmental toxins called endocrine-disrupting compounds that are thought to negatively impact human health by mimicking or affecting hormones, the researchers said in a statement. The researchers also said that there is growing concern that exposure to these chemicals by young people is more dangerous than once thought. They said that their most recent findings may support the “hygiene hypothesis,” which maintains that young people who are too clean are not exposed to micro-organisms that are beneficial for the development of the immune system.
