Nokia bets on Linux in iPhone battle: sources
ADVERTISEMENT

HELSINKI - Nokia Oyj <NOK1V.HE> will try again to tackle Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone in the top-end of the handset market with a bet on Linux software, several industry sources told Reuters. Top handset maker Nokia will show its first high-end phone running on Maemo, a version of Linux, next week at the annual Nokia World event in Stuttgart, Germany, the sources said.
Sony adds wireless e-reader as Kindle rival
SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK - Sony Corp <6758.T> unveiled its first wireless electronic reader, challenging Amazon.com Inc's <AMZN.O> momentum in the growing digital book market. At $399, Sony's "Daily Edition" is $100 more expensive than Amazon's basic Kindle but it has a 7-inch touch screen and an aluminum body. It will go on sale in December with AT&T <T.N> providing its 3G wireless Internet service.
"House" gets guerrilla ad treatment
LOS ANGELES - "Snakes on a cane." Sound familiar? Perhaps, during commercial breaks on Fox, you've seen the flashes of a caduceus that uses a cane instead of a staff. You might have seen the symbol drawn with chalk on New York streets. Or even clicked through to the phrase's cryptic Web site. Fox is set to announce what many who have spied the symbol already suspect: It has been a summerlong guerrilla marketing promotion for Season 6 of "House" in the fall.
YouTube to share ad money with more video makers
NEW YORK - YouTube, the world's most popular video sharing site, said on Tuesday it will start sharing advertising cash with users who upload the most popular clips of everything from skateboarding dogs to dancing babies. The video site, which is owned by Web search giant Google Inc <GOOG.O>, said it will extend its YouTube partnership program to allow individuals to make money when their videos are deemed eligible based on the number of views and how widely they are shared with other users.
Yahoo to compete with Bing despite Microsoft deal
SUNNYVALE, California - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> said on Monday it has revamped its search to compete against Microsoft Corp's <MSFT.O> Bing, even as it relies on the Redmond giant to power its queries. The announcement of plans to put a new face on Yahoo Messenger and Mail and add functions to its search engine came after news that Google <GOOG.O> and Yahoo each lost a fraction of a point of U.S. search share to Microsoft last month.
IBM, Indian outsourcers win services deal from BP
BANGALORE - IBM <IBM.N> and India's top three outsourcing firms have each won five-year IT services contract from oil and gas major BP Plc <BP.L>, the firms said on Wednesday, amid hopes of a revival in technology spending. Neither IBM nor the Indian firms, Tata Consultancy Services <TCS.BO>, Infosys Technologies <INFY.BO> <INFY.O> and Wipro <WIPR.BO> <WIT.N>, disclosed financial details of the contract.
Jessica Biel tops list as most risky star in cyberspace
LOS ANGELES - Actress Jessica Biel has overtaken Brad Pitt as the most dangerous celebrity to search in cyberspace, according to Internet security company McAfee Inc. For the third consecutive year, McAfee surveyed which A-list celebrity was the riskiest to track on the Internet after Pitt topped the list last year and Paris Hilton came in first in 2007.
UK proposes cutting Web access to file sharers
LONDON - Repeat offenders who persist in illegally downloading music from file-sharing sites such as Limewire could be blocked from accessing the Web under British government proposals issued on Tuesday. The government said it was publishing new ideas to speed up the process of tackling unlawful peer-to-peer file sharing to prevent damage to the content industries.
Yahoo to launch Arabic portal with Arab partner
DUBAI - U.S. internet powerhouse Yahoo <YHOO.O> said on Tuesday it is acquiring Maktoob.com, one of the Arab world's largest online portals, in a bid to tap into the Arab region, making Yahoo available in Arabic. Yahoo has around 44 million users in the Middle East and North Africa region per month, Keith Nilsson, senior vice president, International Emerging Markets, told reporters.
Netbook pioneer Asustek eyes recovery; bets on China
TAIPEI - Taiwan's Asustek <2357.TW> is pinning its recovery hopes on emerging markets such as China as the pioneer of netbooks struggles to compete with bigger rivals such as Hewlett-Packard <HPQ.N> and Acer. Asustek expects a slew of product launches, set for the second half of the year, to help it stem the decline in revenue and profit margins, as it takes a beating due to the increasing popularity of low-cost netbook PCs.
