Borders sees new e-bookstore taking share
NEW YORK - Borders Group Inc's <BGP.N> electronic bookstore went live on Wednesday, and the company set an ambitious target to secure 17 percent of the digital book market in one year, sending its shares up more than 9percent. The launch comes nine months after the debut of the Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> Nook e-reader and three months after Apple Inc <AAPL.O> introduced its popular iPad tablet computer. E-books had already gained popularity with Amazon.com Inc's <AMZN.O> Kindle reader.
Amazon launches UK grocery Web site
LONDON - U.S. online retailer Amazon.com Inc has launched an Internet grocery service in Britain, it said on Wednesday, joining a fast-growing but competitive market. The move poses a challenge to supermarket groups Tesco, Wal-Mart's Asda and J Sainsbury, as well as online specialist Ocado, though Amazon will not offer the one to two-hour delivery slots provided by these operators.
AT&T, Alcatel Lucent find glitch affecting iPhone 4
NEW YORK - AT&T Inc <T.N> and network equipment maker Alcatel Lucent <ALUA.PA> have found a software defect that cuts speeds for customers looking to send data from the Apple Inc <AAPL.O> iPhone 4 or from laptop modems. AT&T said on Wednesday that the glitch, which Alcatel Lucent is working on fixing, affects less than 2 percent of its wireless customer base as the iPhone 4 is the only smartphone that runs on the network technology in question.
Microsoft plans small job cuts: report
- U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> is planning to cut a small number of jobs as early as this week, the Wall Street Journal said, citing a person familiar with the matter. The size of the job cuts could not be learned, the Journal said.

UK inquiry finds emails do not undermine climate science
LONDON - Emails stolen from one of the world's leading climate change research centers contained no evidence to undermine the case for manmade global warming, a report found on Wednesday. An investigation into the British research unit cleared its scientists of serious wrongdoing, but criticized their lack of openness and said some of their data was misleading.
Ridley Scott helms YouTube competition for documentary
NEW YORK - Hollywood directors Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald will pull together video from YouTube users for a documentary that captures for future generations the global community in one day, YouTube said on Wednesday. The documentary, called "Life in a Day," will select footage from 20 people around the world who capture moments of their daily lives on July 24. They will be credited as co-directors on the film and flown to its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival held in January.
Sony slashes Reader price in war with Kindle and Nook
LOS ANGELES - Sony Corp <6758.T> has cut the price of its Reader devices, joining an electronic-reader price war between Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> and Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N>. On Sony's website, the Daily Edition version of the Reader was listed at $299.99, down from $349.99. The Touch Edition was priced at $169.99 from $249.99, and the basic Pocket Edition was discounted to $149.99 from $169.99.
Netflix signs movie deal with Relativity Media
LOS ANGELES - Netflix Inc has struck a deal with Relativity Media LLC to screen its movies ahead of pay-TV channels for the first time, putting it in competition with the likes of Time Warner's HBO or Showtime. Analysts say the Relativity deal is likely the first of many, challenging the years-long exclusivity that premium movie channels now pay for. The choice of Netflix over HBO and its peers reflects how studios are looking to the Web for distribution while finding themselves embroiled in costly price battles with cable networks.
Google, Bing search engines turn to music
DENVER - Internet search engines pride themselves as being neutral providers of information. But as competition mounts to own the connection between fans and online content, tech behemoths like Microsoft and Google increasingly are turning to their search engines to help drive their entertainment content strategies.
