Banter-happy mates Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement deftly maintained the laugh factor with their characteristic Kiwi parody style. The warm up was provided courtesy of Arj Barker, who plays the crass advise-dispensing friend Dave on the duo's HBO series. His absurdist observational comedy hit all the right notes with the crowd. He touched on a multitude of topics ranging from Michael Phelps pot smoking to global warming, which I might note are totally unrelated events. A particular moment of revelation occurred after he explained "what happens in Vegas no longer stays in Vegas...losing money is a worldwide trend." The statement produced a knowing, reflectionary laugh from on-lookers as if to say "yeah, that's funny but also so true" while messaging their aching pocketbooks. After Barker masterfully readied the audience, it was time for the hairy, awkward boys from the Southern Hemisphere to appear. For the opening number, the chuckle masters donned crudely constructed robot costumes for "Too Many Dicks on the Dancefloor." As the Kiwis crooned, the ladies swooned. So much so that a few pairs of women's knickers were thrown at the guitar-strumming playboys. "What a tribute", Jemaine acknowledged, noticeably bewildered by the act of fan obsessiveness. "We're gonna rock n' roll tonight", Bret confidently stated early in the evening. And right he was. Season one hits "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros", "The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)" "Mutha'uckas", "Leggy Blonde", "I'm Not Crying" and "Albi the Racist Dragon" were received in uproarious welcome. The series of old favorites was rounded out with a righteous declaration: "It's Business Time." Nigel, the one man New Zealand orchestra, joined the lads on stage to perform a collection of tune from season two of the HBO show. Newer tracks included "Hurt Feelings", "We're Both in Love with a Sexy Lady" and the saucy "Sugalumps". A fitting but nonetheless shock-inducing strobe light show accompanied "I Love Dogs with Epilepsy." Capping the hilarity with "Bowie", the pair boasted how they once enjoyed "jamming out with him." A similar sentiment was echoed by the room packed with rapt ticket-holders, who were laughing all the way to the merchandise booth to pick up their own pair of FOTC undies.
