Nokia hit by no-brand vendors success: Gartner
HELSINKI - Nokia and other established handset makers are quickly losing global market share to a push by Chinese no-brand vendors into emerging markets, research firm Gartner said. Surging growth of no-brand manufacturers coupled with growing smartphone sales boosted third-quarter cellphone sales 35 percent, Gartner said on Wednesday. It raised its outlook for growth in 2010, which it forecast would top 30 percent.
Google to give staff a 10 percent pay rise: reports
NEW YORK - Google Inc <GOOG.O> will give its staff a 10 percent pay increase at the start of next year, according to website Silicon Alley Insider. Chief Executive Eric Schmidt informed Google's more than 23,000 employees of the raise by email, the Wall Street Journal later reported.
AT&T to offer GetJar on phones such as BlackBerry
NEW YORK - AT&T Inc <T.N>, the second largest U.S. mobile provider, is the second major carrier in the United States to promote the mobile applications store of GetJar, a privately held company that is trying to compete with companies like Google Inc <GOOG.O> and Research In Motion <RIM.TO>. Starting on Tuesday, AT&T will let customers use a mobile apps store run by GetJar on about 50 different AT&T phone models ranging from the company's cheapest phones to BlackBerry smartphones, the companies said.

Internet firms must be accountable for data: execs
WASHINGTON - Internet companies need to be more accountable for the mass of personal data collected from users to guard against cybercrime, industry executives said on Tuesday. "Information is the currency of growth, but it's also increasingly become the currency of crime," Peter Cullen, chief privacy strategist for Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>, said at the Family Online Safety Institute's annual conference.
Microsoft sues Motorola over Xbox patent issue
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> stepped up its legal battle with Motorola Inc <MOT.N> on Tuesday, as the software company accused the phone maker of charging excessive royalties on network technology used in Microsoft's Xbox game system. The suit, filed in federal court in Seattle, comes a month after Microsoft charged that its former ally Motorola infringed a number of its patents in its Android-based smartphones, which run on software built by Google Inc <GOOG.O>.
Sharp and Fujitsu unveil 11 new Symbian phones
HELSINKI - Japan's Fujitsu Ltd <6702.T> and Sharp Corp <6753.T> unveiled 11 new smartphone models running Symbian software on Tuesday, a rare show of support for Nokia's <NOK1V.HE> waning software platform. Though Symbian is the largest smartphone operating system, on more than 400 million such phones since 2000, it has lost ground since the introduction of Apple's <AAPL.O> iPhone in 2007, and Japan is the only market where other manufacturers than Nokia are still taking it on.
AT&T halves selling price on BlackBerry Torch
TORONTO - AT&T <T.N> has slashed the price of Research In Motion's <RIM.TO> BlackBerry Torch smartphone as it ushers in three devices running on Microsoft's <MSFT.O> Phone 7 operating system ahead of the holiday buying season. The Torch, a touchscreen phone with a slide-out Qwerty keyboard, launched exclusively on AT&T from August 12 for $199.99 with a two-year contract, about the same price as Apple's <AAPL.O> iPhone.
IAC stops developing search, Ask.com to outsource
BOSTON - Internet mogul Barry Diller has ended his IAC/InterActiveCorp's <IACI.O> quest to develop Internet search technology to rival that of Google Inc <GOOG.O> and Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>. IAC's Ask.com unit said on Tuesday it has decided to buy its Web search results from one of its rivals, but it declined to say which one, citing a clause in the contract.
Yahoo appoints new ad sales chief
NEW YORK - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> chose Wayne Powers, a former Time Inc executive, as its new senior vice president of North American ad sales. Powers will report to Yahoo's newly appointed executive vice president of the Americas, Ross Levinsohn, the company said on Wednesday.
