Share November 10, 2010 7:34 p.m. EST Topics: politics, social issue, international organization, United States AHN News Staff New York, United States (AHN) - Following strong opposition from the human rights activists and the United States, Iran has failed to obtain a seat on new United Nations super-agency for womens' rights. However, Saudi Arabia secured a seat in the new agency called the U.N. Women, which is formed after merging four existing bodies. Commenting on this development, Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi said that it was like a joke to listen membership of countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia, which are infamous for their poor human right records. When there were no competitors, Iran was guaranteed a seat, however, East Timor offered to join the body and won the seat instead. Before the voting, Human Rights Watch had warned that the world would get a wrong signal if the U.N. body admits either Iran or Saudi Arabia because of their poor rights record. Last year, a U.N. General Assembly resolution expressed deep concerns over Iran’s growing number of execution, torture, discrimination against minorities, flogging and amputation cases. Iran also sparked an international outrage recently when its Supreme Court sentenced a woman to death by stoning for committing adultery. Rights activists said that Saudi Arabia – a country where women are barred from facilities used by men like driving a car, should not have got the seat. The rights groups also criticized the board’s decision to grant uncontested seats to Libya and Congo. U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice welcomed the Iran’s failure at the ballot. "I am not going to deny that there were several countries that are going to join the board of U.N. Women that have less than stellar records on women's rights, and indeed human rights," she added.
