Fox shakes up "Idol", makes Simon replacement priority
LOS ANGELES - The search to replace Simon Cowell on "American Idol" will be the biggest issue for Fox television this summer as it tweaks the sagging TV singing contest next year to shorten the weekly results show. Senior network executives told reporters on Monday they had listened to feedback from audiences, which have slipped by some 9 percent this year in a lackluster season that has seen challenges to "Idol"s long reign as the most-watched show on U.S. television.
Javier Bardem moves Cannes crowd in "Biutiful"
CANNES, France - Death stalks the cast of "Biutiful," Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's moving portrayal of a father rushing to put his chaotic life in order before it is too late. Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem plays the central role in a Spanish-language drama set in the back streets of Barcelona, where immigrant workers live in squalor and struggle to survive in a world where they are treated like animals.
Robin Hood hits bull's-eye at worldwide box office
LOS ANGELES - "Robin Hood" took the lead at the worldwide box office in its first weekend of release, but the costly Russell Crowe saga failed to replace "Iron Man 2" as the top choice in North America, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday. Crowe's fifth collaboration with director Ridley Scott earned $111.1 million from 57 markets, led by a relatively modest $37.1 million in the United States and Canada, said Universal Pictures, a unit of General Electric Co.
Indian company trains small army to meet 3D surge
CANNES - India's Reliance MediaWorks, part of the Reliance ADA group, is training a small army of artists to meet the rise in demand for 3D films following the huge success of James Cameron's "Avatar" and other films. Films like "Avatar," with its record-shattering $2.7 billion global box office, "Alice in Wonderland" and "Clash of the Titans, have convinced studios to spend extra cash and add a third dimension to movies to boost box office earnings.
Morocco resists Islamist calls to ban Elton John
RABAT - Elton John will headline Morocco's biggest music festival this week despite calls by religious conservatives for the gay singer to be turned away, the event's organizer said. Allowing the British singer and songwriter to perform at the Mawazine World Rhythms festival in the capital Rabat would tarnish the image of the north African kingdom, say powerful opposition Islamists.
Cannes film festival hits halfway short on buzz
CANNES, France - Crowds crammed to see the stars walk the red carpet, champagne flowed, fireworks filled the sky and screenings were packed, yet the Cannes film festival hit halfway on Monday lacking one key ingredient -- buzz. The world's largest annual cinema showcase opened on May 12 and closes on May 23, when one of 19 movies in the main competition will be named winner of the coveted Palme d'Or.
Fox rolls out four new comedies
NEW YORK - Fox Broadcasting unveiled a U.S. prime-time TV lineup that looks to new comedies, the magic touch of Hollywood director Steven Spielberg and the success of musical series "Glee" to bolster a schedule that has been tops with young audiences for six years running. The biggest question left unanswered on Monday by Fox -- the second broadcast network to unveil its 2010-11 television schedule -- is how it plans to cope with the departure of American Idol judge Simon Cowell, long seen as the face of the most popular TV show in the United States.
U.S. court won't hear Cablevision/FCC must-carry case
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Supreme Court said on Monday that it would not hear an appeal by Cablevision Systems Corp to the Federal Communications Commission's must-carry requirement that forces cable systems to carry programing of broadcast television stations. The high court in 1997 upheld the 1992 law that obligates cable television companies to carry local broadcast stations. But Cablevision said circumstances have since changed and the monopolistic nature of the cable industry has been replaced by vigorous competition.
Scorsese eyes 2011 bow for George Harrison film
CANNES - Martin Scorsese says he hopes to release his George Harrison documentary next year, and is promising plenty of unseen footage and unheard songs. He has been developing the project with the former Beatle's widow, Olivia, for the past three years, even while he was working on his recent thriller "Shutter Island."
Heavy metal veteran Ronnie James Dio dies, aged 67
LOS ANGELES - Ronnie James Dio, the pint-sized heavy metal singer who replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath, died on Sunday, five months after being diagnosed with stomach cancer, his wife said. He was 67. The rocker, born to an Italian-American family in New Hampshire as Ronald James Padavona, also led his own band, Dio, whose 1983 song "Holy Diver" is a classic-rock radio staple.
