New York City, NY, United States (AHN) - Among the many young people finishing school, one man will be receiving his own honors. However, for him, the word “graduate” holds a lot more memories of the past than most scholars.
Mike Nichols, director of such films as “The Graduate,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” and “The Birdcage,” among others, will be honored with the 37th Annual American Film Institute Life Achievement Award. The film and stage legend will receive his award at a gala celebrating his career June 10 at the famous Stage 15 of the Sony Studios lot in Culver City, Calif.
Heading up the tribute to the filmmaker will be some of his most noteworthy stars: Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Cher and Meryl Streep. Roberts first worked with Nichols in 2004’s adult drama “Closer” and recently starred in the director’s “Charlie Wilson’s War,” with Hanks starring as the eponymous politician. Cher initially worked with Nichols in 1983’s “Silkwood,” which earned her first Oscar nomination, as did Streep, who went on to star in Nichols’ “Postcards from the Edge” and the TV mini-series “Angels in America.”
AFI Life Achievement Award recipients Hanks and Streep join fellow winners of the award in planning the event such as Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson and Elizabeth Taylor. Also working on the event are other stars who have worked with Nichols throughout his career, including Amy Adams, Candice Bergen, Harrison Ford, Elaine May, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Mary-Louise Parker, Natalie Portman, Sigourney Weaver, Robin Williams and more.
The event will air in June as “TV Land Presents: The AFI Life Achievement Awards Honoring Mike Nichols.”
