India police clash with Kashmir protest, 7 injured

SRINAGAR, India – Hundreds of Kashmiris hurled stones at police in the capital of Indian Kashmir on Friday, defying restrictions during a strike called by separatists to protest death sentences given to three men convicted in a 1996 bombing in New Delhi.
Police and paramilitary soldiers fired warning shots and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, said a police officer on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media. At least seven people were injured, police said.
The protesters chanted "We want freedom" and "Revoke the death verdict" on the streets of Srinagar, which was largely deserted as residents and businesses observed the strike.
Shopkeepers pulled their shutters down, schools closed and buses and trucks kept off the road in the summer capital of India's Jammu-Kashmir state after the main separatist alliance, All Parties Hurriyat Conference, called on residents to halt work.
The separatists were angered by a New Delhi court decision Thursday that found three members of the Jammu-Kashmir Islamic Front guilty of carrying out a bombing in a crowded market that killed 13 people and wounded 38 others. The defendants were sentenced to death.
Thousands of troops patrolled the deserted streets of Srinagar on Friday, looking to block any demonstrations during the strike.
Of seven injured, one was moved to a hospital in a critical condition, said the local police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Local residents said gunfire from the troops hit the man in his abdomen.
Hemant Lohia, a senior police officer, said police were investigating the nature of the injury. "We're checking whether he was struck by a bullet or a tear gas shell."
Police detained four separatist leaders, including the head of Jammu-Kashmir Liberation Front, a political group that supports independence for Kashmir.
The Jammu-Kashmir Islamic Front, meanwhile, is one of more than a dozen rebel groups fighting in Indian Kashmir since 1989 for the Muslim-majority state's independence from predominantly Hindu India, or its merger with Pakistan. More than 68,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the conflict.
Kashmir is split between the two rival neighbors, while both claim the entire territory. They have fought two wars over Kashmir since their independence from Britain in 1947.
