Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou is about to ask for activation of the EU-IMF debt rescue mechanism, a government source told AFP. ATHENS (AFP) - – Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou appealed for debt relief from the European Union and IMF on Friday and told his country it was a vital national need. "The activation of the (EU-IMF aid) mechanism is a national need, and for this reason I ordered the finance minister to take all the necessary steps," Papandreou said in a nationally televised address. "Our partners will do what is necessary to offer us a safe port to allow our boat to float again ... and send a message to the markets that the European Union is not playing and is protecting the euro," he said. Papandreou made his appeal one day after fresh strikes over austerity measures to reduce a public deficit which has shaken the euro and sparked fears that the crisis could spread to other weak eurozone countries. Related article: Bailouts in Europe: some precedents The prime minister blamed the former conservative government for the crisis and railed against speculators after the interest rate demanded by investors to hold Greek debt skyrocketed to record heights this week. "Today the situation in the markets risks ... squandering not only the sacrifices made by Greeks but also the normal functioning of the economy due to the high interest rates," he said. The Socialist prime minister, who was elected in October, accused the previous government of making "criminal choices." (and) an economy exposed to hungry speculators," Papandreou said from the island of Kastelorizo on the Aegean sea. The yield, or interest rate, on Greek 10-year bonds fell to 7.985 percent after Papandreou asked for EU-IMF aid. The rate had soared to a record 8.802 percent late Thursday after the EU said Greece's public deficit was wider than previously thought at 13.6 percent and the Moody's downgraded the country's sovereign debt rating by one notch. Eurozone ministers have offered debt-stricken Greece up to 30 billion euros (40 billion dollars) in 36-month loans for this year at a rate of around five percent if needed. The IMF could contribute another 10 billion or 15 billion euros in emergency loans this year.
