Denver, CO, United States (AHN) - Preparing for your child's higher education can be a difficult task, especially for first-time parents. A new website from the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) aims to help parents identify possibly unforeseen expenses and help build a more comprehensive college budget.
First on the list is deciding how to split expenses. Most families know tuition, housing, books and food are obvious expenses. But what about clothes, healthcare, joining a Greek organization or a club, entertainment and travel? Unforeseen expenses can derail an education, and put a future in jeopardy.
"No matter how much or how little you plan to contribute to your child’s college education, living expenses and emergencies can arise. So it’s critical to plan ahead,” NEFE spokesman Paul Golden explains. “By setting expectations and responsibilities with your child early about the costs of living on his or her own, you’ll both be prepared to have any enjoyable, and affordable, college experience.”
For parents interested in help, there are free resources available online, including a copy of the "NEFE’s 40 Money Management Tips Every College Student Should Know" - available at: www.nefe.org/helpforconsumers/graduation2010.
