Taliban suicide attack kills at least five in Afghan capital
AFP - 2 hours 56 minutes ago
KABUL (AFP) - - A suicide bomb exploded during a meeting in the information and culture ministry in the Afghan capital Thursday, killing at least five people and wounding several more, police said.
The insurgent Taliban movement claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call with AFP, saying it had been carried out by three men -- two of whom had escaped -- and was aimed at "foreign experts."
This could not be immediately confirmed independently.
"There was an explosion inside the press conference room of the ministry of information and culture," deputy Kabul police chief Alishah Ahmadzai told AFP.
"We can confirm at least five people martyred and another five wounded," he said, adding three of the wounded were in a critical condition.
The bomb blew a hole in a wall of the meeting room into a parking lot, Ahmadzai said.
It could not be immediately established if the minister was in the building at the time.
Ambulances rushed to the scene of the attack, in the heart of the city not far from the presidential compound, as police cordoned off the area, an AFP reporter said.
Health ministry spokesman Abdullah Fahim said that ambulances had taken one dead and a dozen wounded to hospital.
"There might be others taken to different hospitals by individuals and we need time to count them all," he said.
The interior ministry said the attacker appeared to have blown himself up on the first floor of the several-storey building.
"Initial information we have is there was a suicide attack on the first floor of the ministry of information and culture, inside the building," spokesman Zemarai Bashary told AFP.
"We heard a big explosion," deputy minister of information and culture, Din Mohammad Rasouli, told reporters outside the building.
"At this state I cannot say anything about the blast or its casualties."
The attack was similar to scores carried out by Taliban and other insurgents fighting the Western-backed government of President Hamid Karzai.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the three attackers had first opened fire on guards at the ministry. One then entered the building and blew himself up, he told AFP by telephone.
The two others escaped. "The suicide bomber targeted foreign experts," he said.
Insurgent violence is concentrated mainly in southern and eastern Afghanistan but there have been several attacks inside the city this year and Taliban insurgents are said to control areas close to the capital.
