WASHINGTON - A 35-year-old computer programer pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges that he planted a computer virus designed to destroy all the data on 4,000 Fannie Mae <FNM.N> computer servers the day he was fired from the company. Rajendrasinh Babubhai Makwana, an Indian citizen who had been working as a contractor employee at Fannie Mae's facility in Urbana, Maryland, was indicted on Tuesday by a federal grand jury for computer intrusion.

WASHINGTON - A co-author of a widely cited forecast that nearly 300,000 U.S. jobs would be created for every percentage point rise in high-speed Internet use said on Friday these and similar estimates are "a gross overestimate." "There is a great deal of overstatement in most of these studies," said Robert Crandall, a Brookings Institution economist and co-author of the frequently-cited paper with that estimate.

Businesses risk $1 trillion losses from data theft: study
DAVOS, Switzerland - Businesses risk losing over $1 trillion from loss or theft of data and other cybercrime, according to a study released on Thursday by security technology firm McAfee Inc. The California-based company launched the survey after detecting a rapid acceleration of malicious software, or "malware," last year, CEO David DeWalt told Reuters. Malware increased by 400 percent in 2008, he said.
RIM's Storm costlier to make than iPhone: report
TORONTO - Research In Motion's <RIMM.O> <RIM.TO> touchscreen BlackBerry Storm costs almost $30 more to produce than rival Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone 3G, according to an analysis by technology research firm iSuppli Corp. In its report, iSuppli said the Storm, which RIM launched late last year to compete with the popular iPhone, has a materials and manufacturing cost of $202.89.

Senate approves bill to delay digital TV
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Senate unanimously passed another bill on Thursday to delay the national transition to digital television. Nortel exits WiMax business
TORONTO - Nortel Networks Corp <NT.TO> <NT.N>, the ailing telecom equipment provider, has decided to abandon its WiMax wireless technology business as it restructures in bankruptcy protection. In a statement late on Thursday, Toronto-based Nortel said it will also end an agreement with Alvarion Ltd <ALVR.O>. Under that deal, struck last June, Nortel was to resell Alvarion's WiMax access products and help it fund the development of the technology.
