Leading "Spider-Man" actress quits show: report
NEW YORK - In the latest disappointment for the ambitious Broadway production of "Spider-Man," one of the lead actresses who suffered a concussion during its first preview performance is quitting the show. Natalie Mendoza, who plays the villainess Arachne and is the second lead female role after Spider-Man's girlfriend, has been working out an exit agreement for the past several days, The New York Times reported on Tuesday. A spokesman for the production did not return an e-mail seeking comment.
Elton John becomes father of Christmas baby
LOS ANGELES - Elton John and his partner have become the proud parents of a son born to a surrogate in California on Christmas Day, US Weekly reported on Monday. The boy, named Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, is the first for the British rock star and Canadian filmmaker David Furnish, who have been together since the early 1990s.
National Film Registry names 25 films to preservation list
LOS ANGELES - A range of movies from comedy "Airplane!" to George Lucas' "The Empire Strikes Back" and 1906 short film "A Trip Down Market Street" were named to the National Film Registry on Tuesday, ensuring their preservation for future generations. Among others are horror film "The Exorcist," political drama "All the President's Men," 1959 African-American cultural exploration "Cry of Jazz" and director John Huston's war documentary "Let There Be Light," which was banned in the U.S. for 35 years.
Javier Bardem faced down acting demons in "Biutiful"
LOS ANGELES - Fans of Javier Bardem who think he can perform no better than in his Oscar-winning turn as a hitman in "No Country for Old Men," can now think again. This week, his drama "Biutiful" lands in U.S. theaters after playing overseas and earning the Spaniard a share of the best actor award at May's Cannes film festival.
Sandra Bullock in, "Jersey Shore" out in neighbor poll
NEW YORK - Americans would most like to live next door to actress Sandra Bullock in 2011, but the cast of the reality show "Jersey Shore" made the most undesirable neighbors, according to a poll released on Tuesday. Bullock, who has won huge audiences with her All-American, girl-next-door image, earned more than a quarter of the vote in the annual poll on the most desirable celebrity neighbors, conducted by online real estate marketplace Zillow.com.
"Winnie the Opera" to hit S.African stage in 2011
JOHANNESBURG - South African State Theater will tackle the triumphant and troubled times of the former wife of post-apartheid President Nelson Mandela in a production called "Winnie the Opera." The opera about Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, seen as the face of the African National Congress while her then husband was held for years as a political prisoner, will open next year in Pretoria, its producers said.
Alanis Morissette gives birth to son
LOS ANGELES - Singer Alanis Morissette and her husband, rapper Mario "Souleye" Treadway, welcomed a baby boy on Christmas day, a spokeswoman for Morissette said on Monday. "All are healthy and happy," the singer's representative told Reuters in an e-mail.
Ryan Gosling gives fans another acting "Valentine"
LOS ANGELES - By most accounts in Hollywood, he is one of the best actors of his generation, but for Ryan Gosling there will be no major studio movies, no comic book hero roles like Spider-Man or goofy romantic comedies. At age 30, Gosling still prefers movies like his new "Blue Valentine," which debuts in theaters on Wednesday. It was made outside Hollywood's major studios and is an adult drama -- currently the most unappreciated film genre at box offices as audiences seek escapism and laughter in movie theaters around the holiday season.
Chris Brown hints at Justin Bieber collaboration
NEW YORK - Could a Chris Brown and Justin Bieber duet be debuting the near future? According to the older R&B/pop singer, the two have joined forces for a new song set to premiere early next year. Brown posted a note about the collaboration via Twitter on Christmas Day, writing, "ME and @justinbieber got a BANGER/SMASH record for all the fans out there at the top of the NEW YEAR!!! 2011 #BREEZYTAKEOVER"
Natalie Portman pregnant, engaged to French dancer
NEW YORK - Actress Natalie Portman is engaged to a ballet dancer and choreographer and expecting her first child with him, People magazine reported on Monday. The 29 year-old actress met the French choreographer, Benjamin Millepied, during the production of her newly released movie, "Black Swan," which has earned her Oscar buzz.
