A Newspoll taken over the weekend showed new Liberal Party leader Tony Abbott had cut into the strong lead held by centre-left Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. The survey of 1,152 voters conducted for The Australian newspaper found that under Abbott, support for a Liberal leader as prime minister jumped from 14 to 23 percent while Rudd's popularity dipped from 65 to 60 percent. Abbott, who once trained to be a Catholic priest and has been dubbed the "Mad Monk", said the poll was encouraging but that Labor was still favoured to win an election, noting: "There's a hell of a long way to go." He also brushed off a tirade from his predecessor Malcolm Turnbull, who described the Liberals' climate change position and its decision to reject a proposed carbon emissions trading scheme as a "farce". "Any suggestion that you can dramatically cut emissions without any cost is, to use a favourite term of Mr. Abbott, "bullshit"," Turnbull wrote in a blog posted Monday. Abbott, who once described the science behind climate change as "crap", refused to counter-attack. "My argument is with Kevin Rudd," he said.
