Credit: Reuters/STR By Karamallah Daher ADAISSEH | Tue Aug 3, 2010 11:23am EDT ADAISSEH Lebanon (Reuters) - Israeli and Lebanese troops fought a rare cross-border skirmish on Tuesday that killed four Lebanese and a senior Israeli officer in the most serious violence along the frontier since a 2006 war. The Iranian-and Syrian-backed Hezbollah group, which battled Israel in the war four years ago, took no part in the exchange of fire. There was no sign of any extensive Israeli preparations for a large-scale operation; an early indication the clash might not trigger a wider conflict. Security sources and witnesses said the situation has clamed down but tension remained high. Israel's northern military commander said he did not believe Tuesday's clashes would lead to further violence. "A patrol for the Israeli enemy crossed the technical line on the border ... even though the UNIFIL interfered trying to stop it, it continued its crossing," the Lebanese army said in a statement. "A Lebanese army force then repelled it using rocket propelled grenades. A clash happened in which the enemy forces used machine guns and tank fire targeting army posts and civilian houses," it said, adding casualties were reported. The Israeli military said the dead officer was a battalion commander with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon appealed to both sides to exercise "maximum restraint" after the incident. UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti confirmed peacekeepers were in the area before and during the incident, but the force was still ascertaining the circumstances that led to the bloodshed. "Our acting force commander decided to personally fly by helicopter to the incident location ... (and) told them to stop firing in the area," Tenenti told Reuters. Lebanese President Michel Suleiman called for an emergency meeting of the Higher Council for Defense. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad telephoned Suleiman to offer support to Lebanon, Syria's official news agency said. "President Assad expressed to President Michel Suleiman that Syria stands with brotherly Lebanon against the flagrant Israeli aggression on Lebanese land," the agency said. Israel's shekel currency fell against the dollar due to concern about the incident. "If the military says it's going to be a big thing, the dollar will go up tomorrow," said a dealer at Israel Discount Bank. A new Lebanon war could be even more devastating than the last. Israel has threatened to attack Lebanese infrastructure in any new conflict. In 2006 it bombed bridges, fuel tanks, radar stations and Beirut airport. Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri "denounced the Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty." His office said he also contacted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to discuss "ways to confront the Israeli aggression against the Lebanese army." ISRAELI COMPLAINT Israel's Foreign Ministry said it would file a complaint at the United Nations over the clash, accusing Beirut of violating the 2006 Security Council resolution that ended the war. "Israel views the Lebanese government as responsible for this serious incident and is warning of the ramifications if the violations continue," the ministry said in a statement. The Israeli military said its troops were fired upon while engaged in "routine activity" inside Israeli territory, between an Israeli security fence and a U.N.-drawn border line. An Israeli helicopter fired two missiles at a Lebanese army post near Adaisseh village, destroying an armored personnel carrier. A security source said three Lebanese soldiers and a Lebanese journalist were killed and five people wounded. Witnesses said Israeli artillery also fired at the village. "The smoke was so thick it was hard to see the damage to the homes. I heard several shots, but hard to tell from which side," a Reuters witness said. The fatalities were the first suffered by either side since the 2006 war in which 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed in Lebanon, along with 158 Israelis, mostly soldiers. A 13,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping force known as UNIFIL patrols southern Lebanon under a U.N. resolution that expanded its mandate and ended the war on August 14, 2006. The incident occurred a day after rockets that Israel suspects were fired from Egypt by Islamist militants struck Jordan's Red Sea port of Aqaba, killing a man. World Comments See All Comments (14)  |  Post Comment Aug 03, 2010 7:20am EDT Typical. Israel tries to steal Arab property. Arabs warn them. Israel destroys property and kills civilians in a completely unrelated village in response. gurari Report As Abusive     Aug 03, 2010 7:23am EDT Sorry sorry, don’t mean to be inaccurate. I should have said “tries to kill civilians” not “kills civilians”. gurari Report As Abusive     Aug 03, 2010 7:41am EDT Typical is right. The usual sledgehammer to walnut approach typifies ongoing Israeli aggression and over-reaction. And civilians who get in the way needn’t expect any restraint on the part of the IDF. Their policy is to shoot at or shell anything within a kilometer of an intended target. Hence the usual ration of 10 civilian deaths to every one alleged armed opponent. Hewson Report As Abusive     Aug 03, 2010 7:59am EDT Israel will continue to violate 1701 as they have done today. the LAf response will make them think twice b4 doing it again. Only hizbullah can stop these Israeli violations for good. peace1994 Report As Abusive     Aug 03, 2010 8:23am EDT Israel crosses into Lebanon. Lebanese forces shoot warning shots to stp them. Israeli forces shoot at Lebanese forces. Lebanese forces shoot back. Israeli forces shells lebanese village. How typical of the MIGHTY IDF. peace1994 Report As Abusive     Aug 03, 2010 8:31am EDT Now, this is a clear provocation of war from the Israelis. They are apparently unhappy about the uprooting of their spy networks in Lebanon and are desperate for a war as always. There is no country in this world as war monger as Israel and it is high time that the International community gives a clear warning to them. It is very dangerous to have nukes in the hands of such war mongering nation like Israel and the UN should intervene at the earliest. world_peace Report As Abusive     Aug 03, 2010 8:33am EDT I am sure that Israel will claim that behind that three there were several terrorists waiting to rocket Israel. The time for Israel ancient policy is over. It is time to move forward and start acting responsibly, without lies, without hate and without exaggerated violence. kordo Report As Abusive     Aug 03, 2010 8:59am EDT When will Reuters attempt to present an objective, non-biased account of events that deal with israel. The reporters named as contributors to many of thier stories show and obvious bias favoring Israel. Give us the facts, not opinion. Try to find reporters who are not pro-Israeli or Israeli themselves. Reuters’ credibility as a new agency has to be questioned by anyone with an objective mind. Publius1791 Report As Abusive     Aug 03, 2010 9:27am EDT I think Israaelis showed some restraint this time. I mean last time, back in Jan 09, they killed 400 Palestinian children and hundreds of Palestinian women in retaliation for “rocket” attacks (which, throughout the years, killed 20 people in Israel). The ratio on this occasion is not too bad. We should all thank the Israelis for not pursuing their 100 to 1 ratio. Thank you Israel, thank you IDF.
