Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Asia Pacific World US-ENTERTAINMENT Summary Reuters - Friday, September 25 Send IM Story Print Brad Pitt honored for humanitarian work in New Orleans NEW YORK - Actor Brad Pitt was honored on Thursday for his humanitarian work in helping rebuild hurricane-ravaged New Orleans at former U.S. President Bill Clinton's philanthropic summit, the Clinton Global Initiative. Pitt was presented with a plaque from the U.S. Green Building Council which said the actor and his foundation "Make It Right" had created the "largest and greenest single-family community in the world." New Michael Jackson single to hit airwaves October 12 LONDON - A new Michael Jackson single called "This Is It" will hit the airwaves on October 12, two weeks before it is available as part of a two-disc album released by the late pop star's record label. Sony Music's Columbia/Epic Label Group said it would release the "This Is It" album internationally on October 26 and in North America on October 27, to coincide with the simultaneous global release of the Jackson movie of the same name on October 28. Spoof shows turn tables on celebrity obsession LOS ANGELES - Watch out Britney, Octomom and Paris! Shows spoofing your fame are piling up faster than celebrity magazines in a hair salon, and they include a stage musical and animated TV programs. "Popzilla," the latest show to declare open season on Hollywood celebrities and their reality TV kissing cousins, will premiere on cable television's MTV on Monday. Dancing teens, robots face off at box office LOS ANGELES - The Lion will try to get its distribution roar back this weekend, but its female-targeting musical "Fame" will have to fend off a couple other wannabe kings of the box-office jungle. Disney sends out the sci-fi thriller "Surrogates," and Sony expects a solid sophomore session for last weekend's No. 1 movie, the 3D animated "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs." All three pictures appear certain to ring up at least midteen millions through Sunday and have the potential to break from the pack to top the weekend rankings. Pearl Jam poised for first No. 1 album in 13 years LOS ANGELES - Pearl Jam is on course to nab its first No. 1 album on the U.S. pop chart in 13 years next week. Industry prognosticators suggest the band's new "Backspacer," released on Sunday, could shift anywhere between 175,000 to 200,000 copies by week's end. That sales figure should easily place it ahead of the competition when the Billboard 200 chart for the period ended September 27 is published on Wednesday. Showbiz mogul Dick Clark under harsh spotlight in documentary LOS ANGELES - As ailing showbiz mogul Dick Clark prepares to celebrate his 80th birthday in November, a new documentary threatens to tarnish his image by recounting his controversial beginnings. "Wages of Spin," a project that took independent filmmaker Shawn Swords almost four years to make, focuses on Clark's early days in the 1950s as the host of "American Bandstand," the iconic TV show in which teenagers danced to songs lip-synced by some of the biggest pop stars of the day. "Law & Order" ditching D'Onofrio, Erbe, Bogosian NEW YORK - It's shake-up time for "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." Sources from the "L&O" galaxy say that stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe and Eric Bogosian are expected to be phased out at various points during the series' upcoming ninth season. "Surrogates" takes robotic tale to silly extremes LOS ANGELES - "Surrogates" is a movie about human robots that appears to have been made by human robots. Just as the dystopian world the movie portrays is arid and specious, the movie itself is a mechanical sci-fi'er absent of logic or emotions. It functions as an expensive place-filler on the Disney release schedule and, as such, will be welcomed by only the least discriminating thriller fans after it opens Friday. Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell play FBI agents in a society in which no one is whom or what he seems. The future world imagined here is one where humans cocoon at home, connected to remote-control devices, while idealized, synthetic surrogates they control via brain impulses march daily into society to engage in any sort of risky behavior without possibility of injury or repercussion. Every "unit" looks like it stepped out of the pages of "InStyle." Randy Quaid, wife arrested over unpaid hotel bill LOS ANGELES - Actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi were arrested on Thursday following a complaint that they had not paid a hotel bill of more than $10,000, according to U.S. authorities. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department said in a statement that the complaint was made in early September by a hotel in California and warrants to arrest the couple were issued as part of a criminal investigation. Emmy-winning actor to lead Hollywood union LOS ANGELES - Character actor Ken Howard was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild on Thursday, the union said, four days after he won an Emmy for the HBO TV movie "Grey Gardens." Howard, representing a moderate faction in the bitterly divided union, won 47 percent of the vote in a poll to replace Alan Rosenberg, who did not seek a third two-year term.
