Twitter hacked by "Iranian Cyber Army"

NEW YORK - Computer hackers blocked Twitter.com on Thursday, redirecting its users to a website where a group calling itself "Iranian Cyber Army" claimed responsibility for the disruption. Twitter, on its official blog, said some of its records had been "temporarily compromised" but the problem had been fixed and it would investigate.

Google in talks to buy Yelp: report

NEW YORK - Google <GOOG.O> is in talks to acquire Yelp Inc, an Internet local search and review provider, according to published reports. The companies have conducted talks in past years, but in recent months the discussions have become serious, the New York Times said, citing people with knowledge of the deal.

Amazon's Kindle reader breaks monthly sales record

LOS ANGELES - U.S. Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> said on Thursday that its Kindle electronic book reader posted its best sales yet in the month of December, as the battle for the digital reader market heats up. Without giving figures or comparisons and barely halfway through the month, the online retailer said that the Kindle was the most wanted product across the company during the holiday gift season of December.

Libraries ask for oversight of Google books product

WASHINGTON - Three library associations have asked the Justice Department to oversee Google's <GOOG.O> plans to create a massive digital library to prevent an excessively high price for institutional subscriptions, the groups said on Thursday. The American Library Association, the Association of College and Research Libraries and the Association of Research Libraries said that there was unlikely to be an effective competitor to Google's massive project in the near term.

Sony's Stringer says e-reader to stay a book device

NEW YORK - The way Howard Stringer sees it, Sony's digital e-readers should focus on the printed word and making reading "comfortable," even though the consumer electronics giant could turn it into a multimedia machine. Stringer, Chief Executive of Japan's Sony Corp <6758.T>, admits there is a lot of "energy" behind Amazon.com's Kindle, which is seen as the leader in a burgeoning market for portable reading devices.

French court rules against Google over book copying

PARIS - A Paris court on Friday found U.S. Internet giant Google <GOOG.O> guilty of violating copyright by digitizing books and putting extracts online, following a legal challenge by major French publishers. The court ruled against Google's French unit after the La Martiniere group, which controls the highbrow Editions du Seuil publishing house, argued that publishers and authors were losing out in the latest stage of the digital revolution.

Obama moves to boost U.S. broadband access

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration released details on Thursday of a $2 billion program in grants and loans to help dramatically expand Americans' broadband Internet access and create tens of thousands of jobs. The funds, to be released over the next 75 days, are among $7.2 billion set aside in President Barack Obama's $787 billion economic recovery package to bring broadband access to unserved or underserved U.S. communities.

RIM says BlackBerry email issue resolved

OTTAWA - Research In Motion <RIM.TO> <RIMM.O> said on Thursday that it has isolated and resolved the issue that delayed email service for some North American BlackBerry customers this morning. RIM said in a statement that some clients may continue to experience delays as email queues are processed. The issue had not affected phone service, browsing and "PIN-to-PIN messaging".

Palm shares off as Sprint customer demand tepid

SAN FRANCISCO - Palm Inc <PALM.O> reported a wider-than-expected quarterly loss as consumers cooled to its new smartphones in the face of fresh competition including devices based on Google Inc <GOOG.O> software. Palm shares fell 7.7 percent after the company revealed on Thursday that its partner Sprint Nextel <S.N> was selling fewer Pre and Pixi devices than expected and that Palm planned a marketing blitz to stimulate demand.

Hewlett-Packard eyes Africa for customer support

MARRAKESH, Morocco - Computer group Hewlett-Packard <HPQ.N> is looking to Africa as a potential platform for technical support for its customers elsewhere in the world, said its managing director Rainer Koch. "We see Africa as a potential base for providing all sort of services and technical support for customers outside of Africa," he told Reuters on the sidelines of conference in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh on development of African cities.
