Afghan attacks kill international soldier, wound two
AFP - 1 hour 9 minutes ago
HERAT, Afghanistan (AFP) - - A Taliban suicide car bomb struck a military convoy in western Afghanistan on Sunday, wounding two US soldiers, a day after another bombing killed a member of the NATO force, the military said.
Soldiers meanwhile killed 10 insurgents, including some allegedly linked to Al-Qaeda, in operations on Friday and Saturday, the US military said.
The insurgent Taliban said one of its followers had carried out the suicide attack on the outskirts of the western city of Herat, and claimed that several soldiers were killed.
But US military spokesman Colonel Greg Julian told AFP only two US soldiers were hurt. No Afghans were affected, police said.
The separate NATO force announced meanwhile that one of its troops was killed in a bomb blast in southern Afghanistan on Saturday.
The 40-nation International Security Assistance Force did not release the nationality of the trooper or say where the blast had occurred.
The latest fatality means 261 international troops have lost their lives this year in the effort to help the government fight an insurgency led by the Taliban, according to the icasualties.org website.
Most were in attacks, although the figure includes accidents and other causes of death. The figure compares to 232 for the whole of last year.
Troops meanwhile killed five militants in an operation Saturday aimed at Al-Qaeda in the eastern province of Paktia on the border with Pakistan, the US military announced.
The troops also detained a "significant Al-Qaeda associated militant known to finance militant operations and to assist Taliban leaders with the movement and training of Arab and foreign fighters into Afghanistan," it said.
A similar operation in the adjacent border province of Khost was targeted at the radical Haqqani network which has links with Al-Qaeda. About 10 suspected militants were detained, the statement said.
Another five militants were killed Friday in the southern province of Uruzgan in a gunfight with troops, another coalition statement said.
The Taliban were in government for five years until 2001, when they were ousted in a US-led invasion for not handing over their Al-Qaeda allies following the September 11 attacks on the United States.
The militia is waging an insurgency which military officials say is being joined by foreign militants.
