"Call of Duty" game sells $550 million in five days
NEW YORK - Activision Blizzard Inc <ATVI.O> said its video game "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" scored record sales of $550 million in its first five days, but the company is still concerned about weak consumer spending. The game, a "first-person-shooter" that lets gamers portray elite soldiers hunting down targets in locations ranging from South America to Afghanistan, beat last year's blockbuster "Grand Theft Auto IV" from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc <TTWO.O> which sold more than $500 million in its first week.
China orders Microsoft to halt some Windows sales
SHANGHAI - Microsoft Corp has been ordered by a Chinese court to stop selling versions of its Windows operating systems that include fonts designed by a local company, citing a violation of licensing agreements. The ruling, issued by Beijing's No. 1 Intermediate People's Court on Monday, may signal a new challenge for international and domestic software makers struggling with piracy in China -- newly assertive local firms ready to take their own IP claims to court.
RIM security chief sees smartphone attacks on horizon
TORONTO/BOSTON - Hackers could one day turn ordinary smartphones into "rogue" devices to attack major wireless networks, Research In Motion's <RIM.TO><RIMM.O> security chief warned. Scott Totzke, RIM's vice-president of BlackBerry security, said hackers could use smartphones to target wireless carriers using a technique similar to one used in assaults that slowed Internet traffic in the United States and South Korea in July.

Virtual pioneers: Macedonia schools to get wired
SKOPJE/SAN FRANCISCO - "Practical English Grammar by Correspondence" -- a 1973 tome published by the Soviet Union -- sits atop a pile of books on the librarian's desk in Macedonia's Grigor Prlichev elementary school. It's a good book for learning English, he says.
Microsoft to launch Azure cloud service early next year
LOS ANGELES - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> said on Tuesday it will launch its long-awaited Windows Azure cloud computing system on Jan 1, as it looks to take advantage of the growing interest in internet-based software and services. Azure, which provides an online platform for software developers to create their own programs, and space for customers to store data, was rolled out for experimentation a year ago.
Intel's Otellini worries about PC "pinch points"
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California - Intel Corp <INTC.O> Chief Executive Paul Otellini said on Tuesday the semiconductor industry may experience possible "pinch points" in the PC production chain as manufacturers ramp up to meet higher demand next year. Otellini told Intel Capital's CEO Summit that the industry may face a component shortage in the face of a forecasted rise of 12 percent to 18 percent unit growth from 2009 to 2010.
