Mel Martinez (R-FL) in the Senate. His launch comes days before another Republican, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, announces his decision whether to run for re-election or seek Martinez's seat. In a video message to supporters, Rubio said, "Some believe that the path to security and prosperity is a larger government involvement in our economy. That what we need is a government that spends more money, and distribute wealth and pick winners and losers... A majority of us don't agree with that view. And we deserve a voice in American politics." Rubio's conservative fiscal agenda is bound to make for an interesting Republican primary, according to pundits, if ever the governor joins the race. Crist, a moderate, has been a vocal supporter of President Barack Obama's $787 billion economic stimulus package, issuing statements in response to criticisms from other fellow GOP governors who have rejected some of the stimulus money for their states. The 37-year-old Rubio said in his message that his is "under no illusions" about how difficult his goal is, and that "there are people more famous than [him] who may enter this race." Nevertheless he made clear that his campaign "isn't going to be a campaign against anyone." "This is a campaign for the kind of ideas that will change our country for the better... like tax reform," he added. "We have a tax system that is unfair, that discourages the creation of jobs, and actually encourages companies to ship jobs overseas. It will be a campaign for ideas like a balanced budget amendment... neither Democrats nor Republicans have been able to control runaway government spending." Florida state Sen. Dan Gelber and U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek (D-FL), two Democrats who previously launched their campaigns, issued statements criticizing the Republican agenda. "I have a lot of respect for Marco Rubio having served with him when he was Speaker and I was the Democratic Leader," said Gelber, a former staff director at the U.S. Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. "He has never broken away from his very conservative principles, even after the course of history has proven many of their ideas to be wrongheaded... [He] will be a loud and effective voice for those who believe that the direction of the last eight years was the correct." "Republicans have no intention of giving up this critical U.S. Senate seat and their attack machine has already revved up. We will not allow the other side to define us with their negative messaging," Meek, who succeeded his mother former Rep. Carrie Meek in the House, added. Martinez was the first Cuban-American to serve in the Senate and one-time Housing and Urban Development secretary under former President George W. Bush. He announced his retirement in December.
