(AHN) - President Barack Obama on Wednesday holds a trilateral summit with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Afghan President President Hamid Karzai as thousands flee the escalating violence in northwestern Pakistan between local government forces and Taliban militants. Obama is scheduled to meet separately with both leaders as well as hold a trilateral talks at the White House about the new U.S. strategy for the region. He delivers remarks late in the afternoon from the Grand Foyer. Concerns are rising in Washington about Pakistan's security on its nuclear weapons arsenal, in light of recent attacks from militants just 60 miles from Islamabad, the capital. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said Pakistani leaders had not regarded the Taliban "as an existential threat," but that the attacks were "a wake-up call." Likewise, Secretary of State Clinton has said the Zardari government's response to the militants was "much more thoughtful" than past inaction. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has expressed confidence that Pakistani security on the nuclear arsenal. "The United States have invested fairly significantly over the last three years, to work with them, to improve that security. And we're very satisfied with that progress," he said in a Tuesday briefing. "I don't think that's going to happen. I don't see that in any way imminent whatsoever at this particular point in time. And I'm comfortable that the military leadership in particular is capable of dealing with that particular issue right now." The Taliban have occupied the Swat Valley in Pakistan following a peace agreement with the government in February. But they have been attacking security forces and spreading into the area around Buner. The militants "continued firing at various check posts of security forces in Kanju, Saidu Sharif, Matta and other areas of Swat," the Pakistani military said in a statement. "Armed militants have come down from their hideouts into the cities and have occupied civil houses and government buildings. Militants looted three Banks in Mingora city and have occupied the offices of DIG Police and Commissioner at Mingora," it added. The area in northwestern Pakistan on the border with Afghanistan has been called a haven for Taliban and al-Qaeda terrorists who attack NATO and U.S. forces from across the border. Obama has said Afghanistan is "inextricably linked" to Pakistan, and that winning the war against extremists who move between the the borders of the two nations "will not succeed with bullets or bombs alone." His new Afghan strategy includes sending 21,000 additional U.S. troops to Kabul and $1.5 billion to build schools and hospitals in Pakistan every year over the next five years. The administration also has millions worth of nonmilitary aid for Pakistan, which has elicited concerns from some lawmakers.
