A year after West earned widespread opprobrium when he stormed the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards to grab a statuette from the country starlet's tender hands, the twosome will find themselves in uncomfortably close confines at this year's event in Los Angeles on Sunday. French New Wave film director Chabrol dies aged 80 PARIS - Claude Chabrol, one of France's most eminent film directors and a pioneer of the influential New Wave style that revolutionized French cinema, died on Sunday at the age of 80. Chabrol, a close friend of legendary New Wave directors Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard who broke with French cinematic tradition, was a prolific film-maker with some 60 movies to his name, including "Hell" and "The Butcher." Redford digs into Lincoln assassination plot TORONTO - In his new film "The Conspirator," director Robert Redford digs into a little-known angle of one of the best-known moments in American history: the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Instead of dealing with the shooting in the Ford's Theater in Washington, already a movie subject, Redford takes aim at a back story to the 1865 assassination of the U.S. president -- a complex plot that resulted in seven men and one woman being arrested and charged with conspiring to kill the president, the vice president, and the secretary of state. New "Resident Evil" sequel rules world box office LOS ANGELES - "Resident Evil: Afterlife," the fourth film in a zombie franchise starring Milla Jovovich, topped the worldwide box office during its first weekend, but could not prevent overall sales in North America from hitting their lowest level in two years. The videogame-derived film earned $73.2 million, of which $27.7 million came from the United States and Canada where it was the only major new release, distributor Screen Gems said Sunday. Favoritism charges follow Tarantino Venice awards VENICE - Jury president Quentin Tarantino faced charges of favoritism Sunday after he handed out two major awards at Venice film festival to his friends, including best picture to his ex partner Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere." Another friend and mentor Monte Hellman landed a special career award, and Spanish entry "Balada Triste de Trompeta," which picked up the director and screenplay prizes for Alex de la Iglesia, was widely panned by critics on the Lido waterfront. Sofia Coppola's film on celebrity wins in Venice VENICE - Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere," an insider's look at the life of a Hollywood actor who becomes numb to life through drink, drugs and a string of one-night stands, won the top prize at the Venice film festival on Saturday. The choice of the U.S. director's movie for the Golden Lion award will come as a surprise on the Lido waterfront, where reaction to the Los Angeles-based drama was mixed. Firth stammers to success in "The King's Speech" TORONTO - The story of the man who would rather not be king is stealing Oscar buzz at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, with Colin Firth as the monarch who overcame a debilitating stammer to do the job. "The King's Speech" stars Firth as Britain's George VI. It centers on the monarch's relationship with an Australian speech therapist, played by Geoffrey Rush, as his brother abdicates and kingship is quite literally thrust upon him. De Niro and Norton down for acting rematch in "Stone" TORONTO - "Stone," an ambiguous and dark drama premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, may not be an easy story for some audiences , but the nuanced tale was a draw for acting heavyweights Robert De Niro and Edward Norton. "I always liked the script," De Niro said of "Stone," which deals with hypocrisy and guilt, and is set in the rapidly decaying environs of post-recession Detroit. Helen Mirren stars in film of "Tempest" with twist VENICE - Helen Mirren stars in a new movie version of Shakespeare's "The Tempest," but it comes with a twist as the Oscar-winning British actress takes on the male role of Prospero and becomes Prospera instead. The reinterpretation of the play, which celebrates its 400th anniversary this year, was devised by director Julie Taymor, who shot it on the islands of Hawaii. Lady Gaga and jilted producer drop legal dispute NEW YORK - A legal battle between pop sensation Lady Gaga and her former producer and lover has ended, a Gaga spokeswoman said on Friday. Producer Rob Fusari had sued his one-time protege for more than $30 million claiming he was instrumental to her success but unable to profit from it when their romance ended.
