Share September 12, 2010 6:17 p.m. EST Topics: politics, islam, religion and belief, unrest, conflicts and war, demonstration, United States David Goodhue - AHN News Reporter Gainesville, FL, United States (AHN) - The field in front of the Dove World Outreach Center was dotted with black, scorched grass Saturday afternoon as the hours lurched toward 6 p.m., the time the center’s controversial, albeit until recently, little-known-pastor Terry Jones originally said he was going burn the Koran to protest the religion he blamed for worldwide terror. But the burn marks on the grass weren’t from the ashes of the Muslim holy book. They were from the dozens of television news trucks idling for days in front of the small north-central Florida church with crews waiting to see if Jones would follow through on his threat. For one reason or another, Jones backed down from his intension of lighting the Koran ablaze, and instead spent the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City hoping to visit with another controversial religious leader, Feisal Abdul Rauf, who wants to build an Islamic center, including a mosque, two blocks away from the felled World Trade Center. Two days before Jones was supposed to burn the Koran, he said he changed his mind because Rauf told him he would meet with him in Manhattan and that he would move the Islamic center farther away from Ground Zero if Jones called off his incendiary plan. Rauf denied ever making any such agreement with Jones, but Jones still hopped on a plane Friday night bound for New York. A man named K.A. Paul, an Indian-born Christian preacher and the president of a group called the Global Peace Initiative, told reporters here on Saturday that his organization paid for Jones’ ticket. Paul said he urged Jones all week not to burn the Koran, and paying for his plane ticket was the only way to get him to leave his church and the media storm that gathered outside. “I paid to get him out of here,” Paul said. But Jones’ exit didn’t mean the media was going to abandon camp outside his church. By 2 p.m. Saturday, reporters were joined by more than 100 police officers from several agencies there to keep order in case anything happened. Jones’ plan to burn the Koran gained attention from across the globe and sparked protest that turned deadly in some Muslim countries. But in front of the Dove World Outreach Center, there were less than 10 people not affiliated with the press or law enforcement for most of Saturday. And most of those people opposed what Jones and his less-than 50 followers intended to do. “What he’s done has the potential to start a war,” said Connie Amidei, who lives near the church. “He’s put us all in jeopardy.” One man, who would only say his name is “John,” sat on a lawn chair with a bag of peanuts and held a stick with marshmallows. “I just came here for the media circus,” said John, who said he “was in his forties.” “I brought circus peanuts for the circus.” “John” said he thinks Jones had the right to burn the Koran, but he considered the move disrespectful. “I think it falls under freedom of speech, but I don’t agree with it,” he said. By the end of the day, about 100 people from St. Petersburg, on the state’s west coast, marched down the street and gathered in front of the church holding signs protesting Jones’ assertion that Islam promoted terrorism. Sergei Kostin, 46, the head of a group called St. Pete for Peace, said the group still felt compelled to march, even though the church called off the Koran burning. “We need to show that there is a counterbalance to hatred,” Kostin said. Although Saturday ended peacefully at the Dove World Outreach Center, the day did contain some tense moments. At the police checkpoint to the area in front of the church designated for media, two men in a Chevrolet pickup truck were detained briefly because police found a loaded shotgun with extra ammunition in the back seat. After searching the truck for more weapons, police let the men drive off, but a motorcycle patrolman followed them home. One 29-year-old man from Atlanta, Ga., Sebastian Bagby, tried to light a Koran on fire while standing on the sidewalk in front of the church. An officer quickly took the book away before Bagby could set it on fire. What wasn’t clear is if Bagby was trying to make a statement, or trying to get a laugh. He told reporters that he wanted the Koran back because he had nothing to read at his motel room but “Eat, Pray, Love,” the best-selling book by Elizabeth Gilbert, which was recently made into a movie starring Julia Roberts. “So I guess I’ll have to read that – again,” he said. One member of the crowd clearly aggravated by Bagby’s attitude asked him if he’s ever read the Koran. He said he did, but didn’t really care for it. “It’s pretty boilerplate, with a little misogyny thrown it,” he said.
