Pandith cited “a very special quality in India--largest democracy in the world,” noting, “a special relationship with the government of the United States,” while speaking at the event at the Indian ambassador’s house in Washington, DC, to mark Eid, the end of Ramadan. Pandith said that with 1.6 billion Muslims around the world, President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have changed their tones, making relationship with the Muslim world a top priority. Earlier, Indian Ambassador to the U.S. Meera Shankar wished the guests a very happy Eid and highlighted the contribution of Islam in the history of India. Shankar talked of an “egalitarian impulse in India,” recalling that the first mosque in India was built in the 7th Century and Islam made possible the birth of great men like the mystic poet Kabir. The Indian ambassador went on to attribute the role of Islam in the “birth of Sikhism,” which she said took from both Hinduism and Islam. The Ramadan Eid event was observed as the culmination of a month-long fasting and a time for celebration with a large participation from Indian diaspora in traditional dresses. The welcoming addresses were followed by a cultural evening of ghazals and other classical songs, culminating in a buffet dinner.
